Do You Know What Day It Is?

6

It’s Earth Day, dudes! I thought it would apropos to write about being kinder to our planet.

(Oh, wait. I do that EVERY week over here. Oh hahahahaha, silly me.)

Yeah, yeah. Okay, here’s the deal. Blake, a fellow FilterForGood writer, tagged me to participate in an Earth Day meme.

(Before I go on, have you seen Blake’s feature on his personal blog called The Food Chain? He sends little digital video cameras to his readers, and they use them to shoot their own food shows. It is beyond super cool.)

So, the Earth Day meme asks the question, “How will you FilterForGood this Earth Month?”

(What in the hell does that mean?)

It means you are supposed to list 5 things you are going to do this Earth month to better our planet. Easy peasy. Or is it? I’ve already dealt with five milion topics over at FFG, so instead of doing the same old “turn the lights off and recycle” gig, I thought I would revisit my earlier post about household cleaners. Since I originally wrote that on whoorl, I have found several other earth-friendly cleaners that I wholeheartedly adore. So, I give you Whoorl’s Additional Household Cleaners List That She Loves List. (Besides the original ones I previously wrote about, of course.)

1. J.R. Watkins Aloe & Green Tea All-Purpose Wipes – Biodegradable, durable and flushable wipes. They smell damn good and have coconut oil in them.

2. Method Lil’ Bowl Blu – Smells like eucalyptus. Cleans my toilet well WITHOUT bleach. End of story.

3. Mrs. Meyer’s Surface Scrub – Best tub and sink cleaner ever. Comes in yummy scents. (In honor of Earth Day, Mrs. Meyer’s is offering free shipping today and tomorrow.)

4. Seventh Generation Chlorine-Free Bleach – Great for washing kids messy, stained clothes. Free of dyes and/or fragrances and doesn’t contain chemicals containing chlorine.

5. TerraGloss lip gloss in Garnet – This isn’t a household cleaner, is it? Oh, shut up. Everyone needs to look good while being domestic. Smells like vanilla and doesn’t have a bunch of scary crap in it. (Interested in freaking yourself out about cosmetics? Take a look at this.)

Okay, there you go. Are you doing anything different this Earth month? Have you found any new household cleaners (or awesome organic cosmetics, ahem) recently? Do you want to win some great gift packs from Brita? Then post what you are doing differently this month and follow these somewhat confusing rules (copied from FFG because I am slow this morning).

Post five things you plan to do for the environment over the nxet month on your blog. At the end of your list, tag five of your favorite blogs, and include a link back to this post using the hyperlinked text “FilterForGood Blog Meme Contest.” Let them know they’ve been tagged by leaving a comment on their blogs, or on their Twitter accounts (using the hash tag #FFGBlogMeme). Also, be sure to include these rules at the bottom of your post.

An Extra Bonus

At the end of Earth Month, FilterForGood will choose a few lucky bloggers who posted their five things to win some Brita/FFG gift packs to help you go green! Be sure you link back to the original meme post [http://www.filterforgood.com/blog/?p=1407] to enter the contest!

(Or just tell me in the comments section if the above blurb makes your brain hurt.)

  1. Since your last post about green cleaners, I’ve been slowly switching to Method products and alternative cleaners without the harsh chemicals.

And! I have swtiched to reusable grocery bags. And lecture everyone in my family about buying them and using them. Because nothing says saving the planet like yelling at your family that they are KILLING THE EARTH!

I was going to tag you on this post! I knew you would have something good…

  2. I am going to:
    1. Unplug my phone charger (and other electronics) when I’m not using them. I know its a small thing but I always am too lazy. Not anymore!
    2. I am going to use recyclable bags at the grocery store. Again with the laziness, I *have* some of these bags but always forget to use them for some reason or another. I will use my earth bags, I will use my earth bags, I will use my earth bags.
    3. I will turn off my hallway light at night. I leave it on because um, I’m scared of the dark, but I’m also scared of having to wear an oxygen mask and explain to my kids why polar bears are extinct.
    4. I will check out books from the library instead of buying cheap bestsellers that I will only read once. Saves a ton of paper AND saves money too!
    5. I will remember to bring a reusable water bottle to school/work every day instead of buying a water bottle.

  3. my favourite cleaning tool is a micro-fibre cloth because all it needs is water, adn very little of it at that. But for the toilet, I still use non-bleach cleaner. I will have to look for the Method one, I haven’t seen it.

And this weekend we are putting in a clothesline. So for the 3 months of the year when it’s not winter (Canadian eh?) we will forgo the use of the dryer which is so far from energy efficient I am pretty sure it’s energy sucking votex can be seen from outer space.

  4. that should be vortex…unless votex is a word. If it is, then that’s totally what I meant.

  5. 1) I have been meaning to switch the the Method cleaners, but also decided that I would wait until I used up everything else we already had and start new, but now I’m not sure if that is more procrastination or cheapness! So I’m going to do the switch, take the products that I won’t use to the dump for proper disposable, and try not to spend a small fortune at Target.
    2) Like Ris, I have been trying to use my re-usable shopping bags, but it never seems to work, I never remember to grab them and you know they never make it back into the car after being used! So definitely trying to do more of that.
    3) Veggies! Veggies! Veggies! Last year we grew tons of tomatoes and hot peppers, but not much else. This year we are growing a huge variety of lettuce and greens, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, peas and our radishes are looking great!
    4) More supplementing our own veggies with trips to the Farmer’s Market. It is just that early morning Saturday thing that we have trouble with!
    5) Less red meat. Needs to be done for my health (hello cholesterol!) but also for my planet. We all need to eat less (my husband is so not on board with this!)

And Yes, the last paragraph did make my brain hurt (sorry!) so count me in for the Brita/FFG thing and I signed up for Filterforgood’s site.

Hope you had a great earth day!

  6. Hey -did you know there is a getty image of you and wito on msn.com’s main page today? The story relates to being less protective is supposedly better for kids. (Either that or you have a doppleganger pair.)
