The Best Mascara Ever

best mascara ever

Ladies, I’ve been meaning to write this post for months. After years and years of trials and tribulations, I have found the holy grail in mascara. (And you all know I’ve tried them all, right? Drugstore, high end, what have you…have. tried. them. all.)

Are you ready?

Benefit They’re Real! Mascara.

Hands down, this is the best mascara I’ve ever used, and here’s why.

1. It does a good job of adding length to the lashes.

2. It does a bang up job of adding volume to the lashes.

3. It does not clump at all. (I DESPISE CLUMPY LASHES. Please explain to me why some people think thick, clumpy lashes are a good thing? Blech.)

4. It doesn’t feather or flake off underneath your eyes as the day goes on.

5. It doesn’t bother my contacts.

6. You don’t need a separate lash primer to get the full effect.

And, drumroll, please…

7. People ask me if I’m wearing lash extensions all the time. BOO YAH.

Yes, it’s $23 dollars, but it is worth every penny. You ladies need to heed my advice and buy some right now. (Have I led you astray yet? Listen to mama.)

For those of you balking at the price, I will tell you this. There is a drugstore version that is almost as good as the Benefit mascara. Not AS good, but pretty dang good for the price. CoverGirl LashBlast Volume. Give that one a go first, if need be. Good luck and good lashes.

  1. Sephora also peddles tiny sample versions of Benefit mascaras that one could try first. (I’ve bought 3 sample sizes of this mascara…why don’t I just go all in for the whole tube? Weirdo.)

  2. I got a sample of this last month in a Benefit sampler box and LOVE IT. I can not handle when mascara give me raccoon eyes after only a few hours of wear – not an issue with this mascara. My only complaint is it is down right tough to get off. I had to buy some makeup remover wipes and even then I still have traces in the morning.

    Any tips?

    • Use coconut oil to get it off.

    • The Olay Daily Facial Cloths that I use every night get it off easily!

      • I must just have the wrong brand. I’ll try the Olay cloths (I can even cut them down for just eye size).

        • Holy crap, you just blew my mind. WHY did I not think of this?? I love the Olay cloths but the fragrance free ones are hard to find and they are all expensive. I’m going to start cutting mine in fours!

          • OH YEAH! You only need half a cloth for your whole face! I used the wipes in college and ALWAYS cut them. Still do when I pack them for vacations (can’t take regular wash bottle in carry on). A quarter will do in a pinch if you need it to (pre-payday).

  3. I recently got Covergirl Eyelights. Amazing! Seriously, so, so good. And a fraction of the price!

  4. what are our thoughts about trish mcevoy? i recently started using this and i love it and i thought my life-long quest to find the perfect mascara was over…but you mean to tell me benefit’s is even BETTER??

  5. I tried “They’re Real” and hated it! I actually took it back to Sephora and exchanged it. Every time I have tried a mascara with a rubber bristle brush I end up with severely clumpy lashes. I must be doing it wrong.

    • Seriously?? I don’t get a clump! Do you think the sample was old?

      • No, I really think I don’t understand the new brushes! I feel like I end up with too much mascara on (from the base of the bristles?) and it gets all gloopy.

    • Bought this about a week ago and hate it, too! Super clumpy and I don’t like the brush. I do love Covergirl’s last blahs volume, though.

    • You know, I didn’t really like it either. I tried a sample through Birchbox and I can’t help but wonder if maybe I got an old sample? My problem was not really clumping, but it kinda remained feeling sticky or moist or something. All day. I do really like the Benefit BADgal mascara though.

  6. When I saw the title, I was hoping you would say Benefit’s They’re Real! This is my ABSOLUTE favorite mascara. I will be wearing this at my wedding in April. I’m not a crier, so I’m not to worried about smudging because this stuff is that amazing!

    Thanks!

  7. Now I need to see a before of your lashes ;) I have SUPER short lashes (IMO) and need all the help I can get…nothing, NOTHING has been able to give me length that lasts the day. I’m going to splurge on this (maybe the sample first) and see if it works for me too…thanks!

    • My lashes are long, but they don’t have a lot of volume naturally. Try out a sample!

    • My lashes are really short and straight and this did nothing for them but make them look like one big clump. Try the lash blast volume by CG, though. It’s my fave.

      • I’ve tried the Lash Blast Volume from CG and it did NOTHING for me :( …I guess there’s no hope for my sad lashes ;)

  8. Amen, sister! One of the staff at Ulta basically begged me to try it when I went in looking for mascara a few weeks ago, and it is the best! I was getting really tired of the drugstore mascaras and their new formulas every month which don’t live up to their huge advertising claims. Goes on so smooth, no clumps, doesn’t flake, looks beautiful.

  9. If I AM a crier and wear this for my wedding, will it smudge/run?
deva by definition recently posted…Woman or Girl? Which is it?

    • Personally, I am a crier and I used Blinc (also at Sephora) for my wedding. I LOVE it. It is my go to mascara. It has the “tube technology” so it coats your eyelashes and doesn’t come off until it softens in the shower or when you wash your face. Doesn’t flake, doesn’t smudge, doesn’t give me raccoon eyes. I happily pay $22 over and over again!

    • I have no idea. :( I know it doesn’t smudge when I workout/sweat….

  10. Love this mascara – it is what I use! Though I was thinking of trying Benefit Badgirl just for a change. Have you tried it and if so how did it compare They’re Real?

  11. I loooove Maybelline Volume Express Mega Plush. So soft! No clumps! It rocks. Also BLINC mascara is great and never flakes off. I trust you, but these are my current faves! xoxo

  12. can i ask? how long are your eyelashes with no mascara? just wondering if this would elongate mine to super lengths like your photo because wow…it’s like extension length!

  13. I love this mascara…so happy to be done with that quest.

  14. I so agree! I love this mascara! It doesn’t irritate my eyes at all, and I do get asked about extensions as well. Makes my eyes stand out behind my glasses, and makes my short hair look even more polished.

  15. I LOVE this one too. For those of us used to waterproof-it does take a few extra seconds to dry. For cry days (I’m a priest who cries at weddings and funerals), I stick to Dior waterproof, which doesn’t smudge or move, at all.

  16. I’m with Hanna. Blinc is THE BEST. I got to the point where I simply didn’t wear mascara on my lower lashes b/c no matter what I tried, it smudged. I will never ever change. Normally, I’d be tempted to try this but not since I found Blinc. I love it so much I want to marry it.

  17. After major trial and error, I too have concluded that Benefit’s They’re Real is the best. I used to think it was Guerlain or Armani, but this smudges the least under my eyes (and I am a pretty fantastic raccoon eye maker)!

  18. The Eye is the window of our soul and it helps expresses our feelings. But when you add some beauty application on it, it will be a total beauty of your whole personality! :D Wow! Just wow! You have a very nice eyes Sarah!

  19. Just added it to my sephora cart. Clinique has been my go to forever but I love a good mascara so I’ll give it a shot.

On another note, browsing Sephora and looking for a good BB Cream to try out. I have fair skin, brown hair and am prone to dark spots. Have you tried any that you loved?

    Thanks!

    • I have yet to buy into the whole BB craze. I just don’t believe that one product could do all that. Let me know if you find one you love though!

  20. Thanks for the tip! I have relished it too!

  21. I can attest, I thought you were wearing fake lashes. And I’m so glad we marched over to Sephora so I could get some for myself. I love it.

  22. What nude lipstick/lipgloss are you wearing??

  23. I oh so desperately wanted to love this…but half way through my day, it would start to flake off and leave dark specs under my eyes. But I love the way it looks on other people!

  24. Will you *pretty please* do a post on foundation or tinted moisturizer?? I’m not loving mine and need help! What do you use??

  25. cuz … use a layer of “They’re Real” and then a layer of benefits “Bad Gal Lash” on top! “They’re Real” makes the lashes look longer and the other one makes them look fuller. its amazing!!!

  26. I had to come back & comment on this post because I bought that mascara & now MY LIFE IS CHANGED. Too dramatic? Not more dramatic than my new loooooong eyelashes thanks to “They’re Real”!

  27. GreenInOC says:

I hate wearing mascara because of the flaking and dark under eye the smudged flakes leave. If I wear any at all I usually get something from Mother’s (something that at least I can pretend is better for me and the environment!).

So I read this and I love your makeup advice so I went for it. Not wanting to spend $23, I went to CVS this weekend – after pulling up this post twice to make sure I had the suggestion correct! There were 40 different LashBlast versions! Not really, there were only four but it felt like I had a Sophie’s Choice of 40 (let’s not even address the amount of plastic and packaging for my poor hippie heart!).

I went with Fusion (volume and length) because I thought it would be even better than Volume alone.

I put it on and it looks great, except…

The flakes under my eyes. I don’t load it up, I usually put two thin coats. I tried thicker coats. I tried brushing them out with a clean mascara brush and a cool hair dryer. Nothing is working – flake, flake, flake. By the end of the day I look like I’ve got two black eyes and black glitter!

You are the makeup guru and I you’ll share some expert advice, please! What am I doing wrong? Any tips or am I destined to have “cow eyelashes”?! A Prescriptives sales person actually told me that once stating that they were long but grew out straight, “just like a cow”!!!

Hey, GreeninOC! Well, first off, I can’t really say much about the Fusion. All of those formulas are different, so that just might flake a lot. (Lots of their mascaras do.) I would recommend getting the exact one I the link above. It doesn’t flake on me at all. Also, be sure you are curling your lashes with a curler, especially if you have “cow” lashes. (Haha, that’s a hilarious comparison.) It will work wonders!
