How To Curl Hair with a Flat Iron

42

Happy New Year, everyone!

For the second week in a row, Hair Thursday has fallen on a holiday. (YAY FOR HOLIDAYS!) However, I promise to be back on schedule starting next week.

In the meantime, why don’t you resolve to try this new hairstyle in 2009? That is, if you can deal with watching me babble for 6 minutes. (Please try not to fixate on the gross oven burn on my arm – I made this video one week after a Thanksgiving Cooking Accident.)

If you have any questions about the video and/or hairstyle, please leave them in the comments and I’ll try my best to answer to the best of my knowledge.

  1. Clearly this does nothing for me but you are inspiring me to get off my butt and do my own hair video.

P.S. Your voice does not kill squirrels.

  2. I love this tutorial, and I think that now I can finally attempt to do this!!!

  3. I am so trying this out! Our hair is a similar length/cut so it just may work! thanks :)

  4. hee, you are too cute whoorl. I have tried this, but it takes a lil while to get the feel for turning the iron. At least for me. I think the key is probably length, and wrist flexion!

  5. Loved this! Two things:

    1. I never thought I would need a flat iron, and now I need one. THANKS A LOT!

    2. I love your makeup here! You’re going to kill me, but do you mind sharing deets?

  6. Of course I will share! (Although, this was filmed over a month ago, so I’m not 100% sure…)
    .

    Eyes:

Estee Lauder Eyeshadow Quad in Amber Honey
    CoverGirl Outlast Eyeliner in Espresso
CoverGirl Lash Exact Mascara in Very Black (Best mascara EVER and I’ve tried them all…I have converted many peeps, trust me)

    Cheeks:

    Chanel Blush in Tempting Beige

    Lips:

    NARS Dolce Vita Lipstick
    Chanel Glossimer in Pagoda

  7. Thanks! I have to admit that I bought Lash Exact based on your recos and I likey.

  8. I’m so buying lash exact if I don’t already have it…I must check…I try new mascara all the time. It’s rather annoying.

  9. And…now I, too, need a flat iron. I cannot wait to give this a shot. :)

  10. Love the curls and it seems easy enough to do. Thanks!

  11. Awesome video! Thanks so much for sharing! Now I’m going to try this at home.

  12. This video was great. Only sad thing is that I chopped off my long hair six months ago and can’t put this to use. I am experiencing severe hair envy and am contemplating growing out my hair now.

  13. What is this BS about your voice killing squirrels? You have a fine, ahem, great voice. When I grow out my Cate Blanchett I will try this technique. I actually love the cut, but my grays are so bad right now and i dont’ have an appt. until Wed – I considered a home color job, but then thought better of it. Nothing good can come from home coloring unless your stylist picks out the color for you and you have an extra set of hands to help you get the back. Wow – verbal diarrhea. Sorry!

  14. Love the tutorial – I’ve seen a few, but this is the first that makes it look simple!

And yes, fab voice to go with a fab girl!

Question: I have a 1″ curling iron right now and am thinking of getting a larger barreled one for softer curls – what size would you recommend?

  15. ooh. am trying this! even with my STICK straight hair.

also i bought lash exact mascara because of you and LOVE it. no clumps!

    and your voice sounds pretty!

  16. I love the video tutorial! I took my laptop in the bathroom with me and gave it a try. I have a few questions though….
    1) I have semi-curly hair so when I blow dry it I use a brush to straigten it…should I just dry it when I’m doing this technique?
    2) I feel like on my longer pieces of hair it wouldn’t even hold the curl…any suggestions?
Thanks so much and I love this blog! It’s a fav!

  17. Haley, those are great questions which I initially addressed in the video, but subsequently edited out because I was sick of listening to myself talk. ;)

You have two options when creating this hairstyle – you can dry your naturally wavy hair straight with a round brush and then start the tutorial OR you can use the flat iron technique to add some extra curls to your air-dried wavy hair.

I also have very wavy hair, so what I usually do is let my hair dry naturally and then pick little sections of hair here and there and use the flat iron technique on them. It creates some fantastic texture and depth to my waves. PLUS, it takes less time.

Keep trying with the longer pieces of hair. Sometimes, it takes a couple of tries to get this technique down. Also, I would recommend selecting smaller sections of hair for a tighter curl.

  18. Your bangs are amazing- exactly what I’ve been trying to do with mine. My bangs are sideswept but never manage to cover as much of my forehead as I would like. What would you recommend that I tell my hairdresser to end up with bangs like yours?

  19. Your voice is just fine…so talk on!
The problem with my hair drying natrually is that I have red hair so when it does dry on it’s own I feel like ronald mcdonald….not a good look. Do you use any product when you let it dry on it’s own? I am actually friends with your sister and she has really great hair when she just lets it do whatever and dry on it’s own. You girls are LUCKY! I cut about 10 inches off for locks of love a while back and it’s slowly growing back…when I could get the bottom seperated like you showed in your tuturoial I was SO excited!

  20. to jessica – bring in a photo of the lovely whoorl and tell your hairdresser, this is what i want please. ;)

  21. So, I have to say…I was a little worried about trying this on my hair, as every curling technique I have tried has been a big, gigantic FAIL with my stick-straight hair. Also, I’m not the most adept at styling my hair.

This is a complete miracle. It works, and was super easy. And it looked gorgeous. It also helped that my fiance went crazy for it. ;)

Whoorl, you’re officially a hair goddess (as if there was ever any question before).

  22. I was amazed by how much curl I could achieve with my flat iron using this technique. Depending on how much I turn the iron I can control how much curl I want or don’t want. This takes me about 1/2 the time it does with my curling iron and the curl last much longer for me. Thanks so much for putting this up, you are my new hero.

  23. Love this website, it gives so many ideas. I recently cut my hair to about chin length and so am experiencing long hair envy!!! Very jealous of your gorgeous hair. Do you have any advice for putting curls in shorter hair? I am not very hair adept and seem to end up with a crazy mess whenever I try!

  24. Medicis Paris round hair brush:

  25. Love this! I’ve tried this technique before but I couldn’t get it to work properly until I watched your video. I love how you can get lots of different looks. Going over the hair quickly gives you a loose curl and slowly gives you a tight curl. When I went as slow as in the video I came out with a tight spiral curl so after that I went faster to get more of a loose beachy look. My hair seems to be shinier and have less frizz when I curl it this way instead of with a curling iron.

  26. That was great! So helpful, especially for the days when I air dry, but need a little more definition. Definitely need a tutorial on getting the perfectly sideswept bangs!

  27. Nope, still can’t do it! I’ve been late for work at least 3 times trying and I need help. My problem is, I can get the left side of my hair to curl (I’m right handed), but the other side of my head remains poker straight.
    Any tips? Anybody?

  28. if you would like aq spiral curl in your hair you can turn the iron in towards ur head and wrap it twice iunstead of away liuke the video and it will be a spiral curl

  29. I know this video is old but still loved it. Thanks for the tutorial. Off topic but was wondering what song was playing in the background? I understand this long ago so may not answer. :)

    Thanks again!

  30. It’s “Beautiful Otherness” by Bent. :)

  31. Thank you so much! :D

  32. I may or may not have written a blog post about the glory of this tutorial. You may or may not find it here:
