Thanksgiving Menu and Stalking Plans

52

We’re not traveling this Thanksgiving, so I will be entirely in charge of this Thursday’s menu preparation. The grocery shopping has been completed, my Wednesday Prep Schedule is hanging on the refrigerator and I seriously can’t wait for a full day of cocktails, grub and football. I’ll be serving:

Turkey/Gravy – This will be handled by the lovely folks at Whole Foods. I just really don’t see the point in cooking one for the 3 of us.

Great-Grandmother’s Stuffing/Dressing – You know the drill. Tell you, have to kill you, so on and so forth…

Hash Brown Casserole – the ULTIMATE in comfort/unhealthy food.

1 lb frozen hash browns
1/2 cup chopped onions
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup sour cream
1 can mushroom soup
1/2 lb. shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup butter, melted (1/2 stick)

Mix all together, put in casserole dish, bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Enjoy the clogged arteries.

Spanish Green Beans

Dinner Rolls/Biscuits – haven’t decided on which recipe exactly. Any good ones?

Pumpkin Bread Pudding with Whiskey Whipped Cream

1 8 ounce baguette, sliced into ½ inch slices
4 eggs
1 quart half and half
1 15 ounce can pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling)
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon coarse salt
cooking spray
1 cup heavy cream, very cold
2 to 3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons whiskey

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

1. Toast the bread on a rimmed baking sheet until lightly browned, turning occasionally, about 20 minutes.

2. In a large bowl combine eggs, half and half, pumpkin, brown sugar, spices, vanilla, and salt. Add toasted bread slices, cover with plastic wrap, pressing down. Place a plate that fits inside bowl on the plastic wrap and weight with a canned good. The bread must be completely submerged. Let soak until the bread is saturated about 30 minutes.

3. Transfer to a 2 quart baking dish that has been coated with non stick cooking spray. Bake for 60 to 70 minutes
until set and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Store, covered in refrigerator.

4. To make whiskey whipped cream, combine heavy cream, sugar and whiskey. Mix immediately on high speed with mixer for about 4 minutes, until fluffy. Spoon over bread pudding.

Of course, I will be cooking all of this food while sipping on a spicy Bloody Mary with pickles, olives and celery. Mmmm.

What are you making for Thanksgiving? More importantly, are you trying out any special cocktail recipes?

**************************************

I saw Twilight on Sunday night with my good friend Lisa. This might not seem like a huge deal to most of you snazzy moviegoers, but let me tell you a little something about myself. In the past 8 years, I have seen 3 movies* in the theater. (For those of you keeping track, that would be since Y2K. Y2K, PEOPLE.) I simply do not see movies in the theater, mainly because my husband has some sort of bizarre movie-induced narcolepsy, and let’s face it, it’s no fun watching a movie while your +1 is dozing. ALSO, it’s no fun when someone sitting behind you sneezes half-chewed Twizzlers in your hair. Just sayin’.

Before seeing Twilight, I didn’t think my obsession with Edward Cullen could grow. I was wrong.

I am seeing the movie again this weekend. With my good friend Lisa.

(GOOD GOD, WHAT IS WRONG WITH US.)

On a related note, anyone interested in stalking Robert Pattinson with me? My lovely cousins are providing the crazy stalker van, so we’re all set to go.

  1. We are hosting Thanksgiving at our house, and my grocery shopping expedition will begin in about 15 minutes! My husband will be making the turkey (because I do not handle fourteen pounds of raw poultry, ewww) and I will make all the side dishes.

No exciting cocktails, but we have a couple of bottles of really good wine that we plan to open.

I love holidays planned around food and drinks. :)

  2. Oh! And I am seeing Twilight on Sunday.

  3. The_New_Dots says:

Count me in for stalking. I’m OBSESSED. Well, at least with the character that he plays and I’m just deluded enough to convince myself Rob Pattinson is actually a vampire.

  4. Oklahoma will miss you.

I am making a turkey, dressing, cream cheese corn, sauteed southern green beans, mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, and crescent rolls. Oh and a cherry blueberry pie.

I recommend Tomolives to you. They are tiny little pickled tomatoes that look like olives. They are great for martinis and blood mary cocktails. And for stalking.

    OMGEDWARDLOLZLOVEYOU4EVA!!!!!1

    Tomolives? YUM.

  5. I love a homemade mojito, but my favorite cocktail of all time is a Tanqueray 10 martini with a big-ass olive. Have one for me – I’ll be at work.

    *grumble, grumble*

  6. I patiently waiting to see Twilight. Soon, very soon….

  7. 2 things:

    1) Who the hell is Rob Pattinson?

    2) How soon in advance are you making your Pumpkin thing along with other dishes? Don’t tell me you are making all of this the day of? I so need my Grandmother to tell me when I can start making this stuff!

    3) Okay, I didn’t say there were going to be three things but I’m trying out Paula Deen’s Pecan Toffee Tassies. Wish me luck in not burning down the house!

    I just emailed you.

  8. We call Hash Brown casserole Cheesy Potatoes and we have them at EVERY famly gathering! YUM!

I’m in the Edward Pattinson stalking!

And seriously, I wasn’t convinced he was Edward because he didn’t match the image in my head. But he is SO Edward and I so have a growing unhealthy obsession with him!

  9. YUMS. Can I come? :)

    Of course!

  10. I made that bread pudding last year. YUM.

  11. You already know I’m going to see it again this weekend, too, with a cousin who has not yet seen the movie, but read the books.

    Stalk is so definitely ON.

(Have I mentioned that when I was a freshman in high school I saw Titanic 5! (or maybe 6?) times in the theaters? I still have the ticket stubs. See also: yikes. Chris nearly cried from laughing so hard when I told him that. He also thought about rescinding his marriage proposal for a few minutes, too.)

  12. Tera Stephens says:

Get the biscuits in the frozen section at Trader Joe’s. They are fantastic, taste homemade, and have 6 in a box. Perfect for a party of 3! I’m baking 3 dozen as we speak, they are for my Biscuit and Bacon stuffing. Recipe compliments of Williams-Sonoma.

  13. BEST DINNER ROLL RECIPE EVER! (Yes, that did require all caps, it’s that easy, er I mean good.) http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Sweet-Dinner-Rolls/Detail.aspx?prop31=7

I was toying with making a similar hashbrown casserole but I just can’t forgo the mashed potatoes. I considered making both, is that wrong? As a vegetarian, Thanksgiving really all about the potatoes.

  14. OMG. hasbrown cassrole?! i am SO MAKING THIS! plus your recipe sounds super easy! i’m making kat’s famous mashed potatoes. the secret part is butter and more butter.

  15. You guys are going to have a really hard time stalking him since I have already laid claim to the good stalker spots.

    SPILL IT, REGAN.

  16. A cocktail with pickles? GAH! DISGUST!

Oh My God! It’s Slynnro! And she’s complaining about something! IMAGINE THAT. ;)

  17. Um, I will be attempting that pumpkin bread pudding and hashbrown casserole PRONTO.

Also, going to see Twilight with Moose later this week. You BETTER be speaking the truth about its awesomeness, woman, or I’ll hunt you down and chop off all your luscious locks, make them into a wig, and morph into Whoorl v. 2.0, the San Francisco Edition ;-)

  18. Yeah, I was pretty sure my Twilight obsession had come and gone. Then I went to the movie. Then I went again. Then I bought the soundtrack and started rereading New Moon. Even the Twilight dreams are back. I suddenly burst out of no where saying “I miss Edward.”

The movie totally made it worse.

Did you ever read Midnight Sun?

Yes. Twice. (And I’m also reading New Moon again!)

  19. I have to say, I was a little disappointed with the movie, it left out so much good stuff! I reread the book before seeing the movie, then New Moon, then Eclipse (my favorite), and I’m about halfway through Breaking Dawn. For the fourth time. For Thanksgiving, I’m making the same kind of hash brown casserole, fruit/dip, salad, and pumpkin spice muffins (the friends we’re eating with are making the hard stuff like turkey!) Hope you have a great holiday!

  20. I’m in for the Robert Pattinson stalking! A friend and I saw it the night it opened, complete with the teenage fangirls and it was SO WORTH IT. Am already planning my next viewing!

  21. Ohh, baby. No new cocktail recipes, but I am attempting Deb’s Cranberry, Caramel and Almond Tart from smittenkitchen.com.

And a chocolate pudding pie, for my husband, who has some ISSUES when it comes to food. Of the fruit and vegetable variety. Really stifling my culinary creativity over here.

  22. I’m totally up for stalking. When I saw your tweet, I was like hey man, we are on the same page… Let’s do this thing!

  23. Hash browns look great but really, the Pioneer woman is disappointing me on the green beans. In our family, we use a whole pound of bacon (and don’t bother with the totally unnecessary tomatoes.) I never thought there would be a time in my life where I used more bacon than her…

Get me some cocktails, stat. I’m hosting the in-laws!

  24. holy crap batman, that pumpkin bread pudding looks divine.

  25. ALLEGEDLY, Robert Pattinson will be back in NYC next month, according to my publicist friend. Now if only I had a stalker van…

  26. metalia, who is this publicist friend and how can I bribe her for more insider info?!!

see, twilight just brings out the bad and naughty in all of us.

  27. oh, god, whoorl–hash brown casserole! we call that party potatoes in these parts (or funeral potatoes, depending on the occasion). yes, def. comfort food.

as far as rolls/biscuits, there’s a really good recipe by pillsbury. i think you open the freezer bag and bake. delish. ;)

  28. You think your hash brown casserole is bad news? My family’s version consists of velveeta & hellman’s mayo in equal proportion, melted and mixed with the frozen hash browns before baking… and then you sprinkle bacon on top.

Now THAT’S a heart attack special!

  29. I left work early on Monday so that I could go see Twilight minus the hordes of rabid tween fans and all the sighing and swooning. I quite enjoyed the movie. Unfortunately there was much sighing and swooning …. from ME!! Did I mention that I am 34??? Twice Edward’s age?? Count me in on the Robert Pattinson stalking!

Michelle, regarding Robert Pattinson, I think you and I are what people would refer to as “cougars”. ;)

  30. I am so with you for the RPattz stalking. He was the quintessential Edward… totally brought him to life from the vision in my head. Actually, the entire cast did that, with the exception of Jasper.

    So stalking? I’m there.

  31. I will be seeing Twilight again, as well. Perhaps two more times. And…I love that you went to see The Royal Tenenbaums. It makes my top ten movies of all time list. It’s pretty to watch and f-ing crazy.

  32. So, we meet at last. My opposite; my nemesis.

It is I, See Everything In the Theater Man! I always knew you were out there, Never Go to the Movies Woman, but I never thought you’d be hiding in plain sight.

I really ought to have recognized you. I mean, you don’t look THAT different with your glasses on. I feel kind of stupid now, actually.

  33. We make the EXACT SAME hashbrown casserole. It is so bad…but so very, very good…

  34. Movie induced narcolepsy? My Mom so has that!!! The only movie she’s ever stayed awake for was Nanny McPhee (she sobbed and called all her kids to tell us how special we were. lol)

I’ll totally Edward stalk with you. Did you see him on Ellen? ADORABLE! I’ll find it. hang on.
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=G1gknk8gxCQ

  35. Oh Robert. *swoon* I bought the People hottest dude edition yesterday just for his pic. I seriously had the urge to rip out the picture of him and hang it on my wall, a la pictures of Abercrombie models in my bedroom 10 years ago. However, I don’t think my husband would appreciate Edward on his bedroom wall. We saw the movie this weekend (our first theater trip since “Dude where’s my car?” I’m ashamed to even admit that). I wasn’t that impressed :( They just left out too much stuff!

Robert is on Jay Leno tonight, so you can’t miss that. And robertpattinson.org seriously almost stalks him (they post tons of pics and interviews). Not that I, uh, googled him and am obsessed or anything.

  36. SQUEE! Can’t wait to see Twilight again today. Because I’m just totally obsessed.

  37. We do that exact same hashbrown casserole!

The in-laws are coming for Thanksgiving dinner in the Trenches. I plan on being inebriated accordingly.

  38. Don’t forget on top of the hash brown casserole I put a box of croutons, crushed, mixed with 1/4 to 1/2 stick of butter. Adds some crunch. Also, Sister Schubert(not sure of spelling) rolls are great. They are in the freezer section and come in a pan or individual rolls, both equally good. Wish you were here for Thanksgiving. xoxo

Oh, yes! How could I forget! Thanks, mom. Miss you. xoxo

  39. Word on Thanksgiving. Best holiday by far.

And what IS it about Twilight?? I gulped those damn books down. Now I get to see the film to feed the addiction…. Sigh. Maybe something about making a 34-year-old feel 17 again? ;-)

  40. mmm….edward….

    :)

  41. now i have jay leno set to record, thank you fellow stalkers. rowr to edward :)

  42. I think that we’ve got quite a stalking group here. We should make us some shirts. Stalkers United, or something :) I can see it now haha!! Man, Leno needs to come on now….

  43. Happy holidays… we only watch kids movies in theatres, so I don’t know if that’s better/worse than DVDs at home. I figure worse.

  44. If I get to Robert before you, I promise I’ll tell him all about your fabulous hair.

  45. The hashbrown casserole sounds heavenly, thanks for posting the recipe!

And you are sooooo not alone on the Twilight front *or* the husband falling asleep front. Though we take all the kids with us to the movies (all 7 of them) and so the youngest ones end up falling alseep along with my husband. But it’s that or me NEVER seeing a movie.

  46. Do you feel like since you finished the Twilight series you don’t know what to do with yourself? Like your friends in Forks have deserted you?

    Ya, me either…

  47. If you’re still planning on stalking Robert P., I’m totally in. I can bring some sunglasses so we’ll be in disguise (hubs works for sunglass company). Was totally NOT a RP fan until the movie and now I think he is THE hotness.
