How Do You Feel About Forty?

I turned forty last month, and I kind of liked it. Am I in the minority here?

Last month, when I was in California, Kristen and I shot a few Mama Said-type videos, and one of them was about turning the big 4-0. (Kristen turns 40 this month.) What I love most about this video is how I’m all WOOHOOOO FORTY at the start, yet as we start talking about aging and what it means to be an older woman in society, things take a turn. How do you feel about turning forty? Or thirty or fifty for that matter?

I’m in my mid-thirties but I am starting to feel a loss for my childbearing years even though I don’t want to have more kids. Does that make sense? You are both inspiring to me! Thanks:)

I understand this perfectly, feel the same. I think one of the benefits of getting older is being capable of understanding how seemingly opposing feelings can both be valid.

I am SUPEREXCITED to turn 40 next spring! I feel like I was born 40 and have been working to get to my real age.
However, I just had my half birthday and am really feeling a push to do something major with my life to measure up to this milestone. Finally change jobs to one that fits my passions, get regular rest, move my body on the regular…you know, act my age :-D

I turned 40 in August and I have never been more confident/sure of myself in my life. That said, I also am feeling you guys on the “invisible” stuff. I remember Sundry wrote a post about this a couple of years ago. It was jarring, but expressed exactly what you are saying in such well thought out and beautiful way (as usual).

Also: I remember Oprah had about 5 of the original “supermodels” (Christie Brinkley, Paulina, etc) back on her original Oprah show to discuss this issue. It.was.fascinating. Almost all of them expressed this feeling of walking into a room and the expectation of being noticed. Being models and having their looks be such a big part of their success/life, they said it was their biggest challenge in life as they age (I was shocked at how candid they were–to the point where some of them came off as completely insecure.)

Oprah said she is so happy that she doesn’t have this issue because she never felt like people looked at her in that way and she was always known for her intellect, vs her looks. She was almost gleeful to hear the models admit this was a problem ;)

Anyways–great advice about owning it and finding inspiration in an older woman who is totally “rockin’ it”

(So excited to see you two together again!!)

    Happy Belated Birthday Sarah!
I turn 40 next fall and I’m so excited! Definitely feel more confident and simultaneously full of energy and peace. As for invisibility, I read somewhere, maybe it was in Amy Poehler’s book?, about the invisibility of women at a certain age being a superpower. I love approach and have been adopting it. It’s fascinating to step back, watch and listen!
Thanks for doing this video. Awesome watching you two together again!
