We are road-tripping to Colorado later this summer, and need a halfway point to stop and explore. Now, incredulous as it might seem, the family vetoed my idea of traipsing the native land and finding a drum circle or something. The nerve! I mean, LET’S BE ONE WITH THE SPIRIT, KIDS. Sadly, I’ve obviously taken my hobby of binge-reading Hay House authors too far and must be stopped.
So! Grand Canyon, it is! Let me witness all of your majestic glory, oh Canyon of the Grand! Will you be so majestic that my children actually look up from their iPad while in the backseat? Only time will tell…
Tell me friends, what do I need to know about the Grand Canyon? Good places to stay? View? Eat? Call forth spirit gods?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

June 11, 2014 at 6:08 amWe went to the Grand Canyon last year with my two kids and randomly picked a town to stay in. Williams, Arizona. It’s about an hour south but it was amazing. Right on historic Route 66, reminded me of the movie Cars. Ate at a diner called Cruiser’s. Every night of the week they close an intersection and have a hilarious cowboy shoot out in the street. To top it off we ended up hearing about a place called Bearizona, which sounds cheesy but ended up being one of the highlights of our 11 day road trip.

We are also road tripping to Colorado this summer, but from the opposite coast! Maybe we’ll see you there. We did the Grand Canyon a few years ago and if you can, stay at El Tovar. And you must, must get the whole family up and watch the sunrise. It’s one of the MOST SPECTACULAR things I’ve ever seen in my life. Everyone watches the sunset, but the sunrise is just a few people and a truly magical experience.

June 11, 2014 at 8:02 amI’m ashamed to admit I haven’t been to the grand canyon even though I’ve lived in Arizona and Cali for a combined 8 years. Definitely will be a must when my kiddos reach school age though. Can’t wait to see your pictures from the trip!

June 11, 2014 at 1:48 pmOutside of Page is Antelope Canyon, which is a beautiful slot canyon. You have to go with a local Navajo guide, you can’t just stop in yourself, unfortunately. Might be out of your way, but it’s really neat.
The last time I was at the Grand Canyon, Memorial Day 2009, it hailed and sleeted. :)

June 12, 2014 at 7:10 amThere is an IMAX Movie Theatre near the Grand Canyon and it is a must see/do! It is also the best place to get those Grand Canyon souvenirs for the kids.
We camped in the park with our RV Trailer but you can just park and hike a little ways down the trail for a couple of hours, but take care with children as there are NO handrails for most of it and the trail erodes in some places near the edge of the cliff. Also, go see the Hoover Dam before the Canyon if it is in your plans, as the Dam will seem so, so tiny after the Canyon. I know it sounds odd but trust me on this one.

June 12, 2014 at 7:22 amSarah, if you have time to drive through Sedona, do so. I went with girlfriends last year on a whim and did not expect to be quite so moved. It’s an incredibly spiritual place with energy vortexes, crystals, and insane beauty galore. We found ourselves in tears one night at sunset at the top of a canyon with an extreme energy vortex (near the airport, ask around, people know it) in awe of the beauty of it all. We were 4 New York skeptics totally brought to our knees.
We also drove to the grand canyon for a day and honestly I felt like I had been on a roller coaster ride afterwards, my adrenaline was pumping so hard just from LOOKING at the canyon. It was beyond anything I’ve ever witnessed. I am so excited for you to experience it.
ps– loving your blog these days. I’m sure I speak for many when I say that so many of us are going through similar journeys and your voice is so clear, honest, and vulnerable. It’s so refreshing to see a beauty blogger also talk about meditation. Thank you!

June 13, 2014 at 5:21 pmWe visited the Grand Canyon last year and stayed in the national park at Kachina Lodge. It’s kind of a mid-century hotel…not too fancy but was right on the edge of the canyon and we loved it. We could take our coffee right outside to watch the sunrise and it was amazing. There were elk grazing on the grass around the lodge which was really neat to see. We visited the Watchtower at Desert View lookout and loved it.

A wonderful way to see the canyon is to rent bikes from Bright Angel Bicycles. They can accommodate all ages and it was a great way to get away from the main area and see the views.

June 15, 2014 at 11:24 pmWe just did the Grand Canyon for spring break! We stayed in Sedona at the Sky Ranch Lodge and drove to the Grand Canyon for a day. It was beautiful, and we all had a great time. But if I had to do it again, I would stay at one of the hotels inside the Grand Canyon and drive to Sedona for the day. Sedona would have made for a much better day trip, and we would have loved to have had more than just a day to hike and see all the sights at the Grand Canyon. Have fun!
