How much longer until winter starts? Because I better get on this fall reading list pronto. What’s on your list? I’ve got Sharp Objects on my bedside table ready to go – I loved Gone Girl (except for the ending GAAHHH), and I’m hoping it will keep me glued to the page. Love Lisa See, and have been wanting to read Shanghai Girls forever, so I’m making it a priority. What about The Magician King? Anyone have an opinion on that one? Other notables that aren’t pictured are anything by Anne Lamont, The Fault in Our Stars (scared I will sob the entire way through), and the Dublin Murder Squad books.

State of Wonder is not as good as Bel Canto. The Art of Fielding is magnificent. Love The Dublin Murder Squad, too.

November 20, 2013 at 11:06 amAfter reading A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, I am into him! He’s a great writer (he writes about life in India). Right now I am reading his Family Matters. You will love Shanghai Girls. I am a big fan of Lisa See and also Amy Tan (whose new book I am in line for at the library!). Thanks for the Art of Fielding recommendation.

November 20, 2013 at 11:15 amThe Art of Fielding is fabulous, The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer is her best yet, Wild is great and should be read before the movie comes out, and Me Before You is well done. I’m also reading This is a Story of a Happy Marriage, Ann Patchett’s essays and I love Anne Lamont!

November 20, 2013 at 11:27 amI’m on a self-help/self-reflection kick right now. For the longest time I wanted to read The Happiness Project but while I love to read (I’ve been known to spend a full 8hrs, non-stop, reading) self help books never seem to hold my attention because there is no intriguing story line to hook me. Then I had an idea. I joined Audible and now listen to all the self-enhancement type books on my way to/from work.
It’s worked out great. The “Happiness Project” was very interested and helps you take a look at your own desires/passions. I’m currently listening to “The Paradox of Choice”. It’s a bit dry but being someone who can stew over decisions, it’s been very insightful for me.

November 20, 2013 at 11:38 amI read The Magician King and loved it, but be prepared for some intensity and scandalous content! I was expecting Harry Potter, but it’s much more, um, grown up? It totally kept my attention, and i couldn’t put it down, but it is a little bizarre! (A good thing I guess!)
A rec– THE GOLDFINCH by Donna Tartt. Omg I CANNOT put it down, it’s one of the most beautiful and well written books I’ve ever read. The main character– young Theo– has totally captured my heart. Read it!

Actually, she’s a fellow coastal Orange County girl, and frankly, I’m impressed with the dynasty she has created for herself! (She was also my favorite on Laguna Beach, what can I say…)

The Kitchen House was a fantastic read. I also agree with someone above who mentioned The Interestings.

November 20, 2013 at 5:17 pmThe Magician King is the second in the series. However, they are both great. Start with the Magicians. It’s a grown-up look at a magic school. The magical school is a college, so there’s adult content in a way that a magical middle school like Harry Potter’s would not have covered.

November 21, 2013 at 2:38 amLove this. I could read book recommendations endlessly – I’ve added Shanghai Girls to my list! I finished The Fault in Our Stars a few weeks ago. It is enchanting. I did cry a lot – I’d read a chapter and then have to put it away to recover for a while! – but it is well worth it (and much of it is very funny). I also loved Suite Francaise! I need to dig it out again.

November 21, 2013 at 5:55 amI read Sharp Objects after I finished Gone Girl too. Not as great as a read, but still a good mystery. I just started The Fault in Our Stars. So far no tears, but we’ll see how that goes. I know eventually there’s going to be ugly crying and my boyfriend staring at me like I’m insane for sobbing over a book. ::dudes just don’t understand::

November 21, 2013 at 8:02 amLike Anna I had to keep putting The Fault in Our Stars down from time to time until I was close to the end and then I just ended up sobbing loudly and shamelessly on the rush hour tube. None-the-less I would definitely still recommend it. I’m only just reading Gone Girl now (I know, I know, but missed the boat anyway and I’ve been holding out until it was my turn to pick for bookclub). The last book I really enjoyed was Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. I was a bit cynical about parts of it but found it a really interesting read and even more interesting to discuss. Other than that I’ve been madly downloading any free books on itunes by classic authors – it’s amazing how prolific some authors were.

November 21, 2013 at 11:06 am“Shanghai Girls” is fantastic. If you like it, read “Dreams of Joy” – it’s the sequel and equally great. Both books really stuck with me. Another book that got under my skin is “Moloka’i” by Allan Brennert. Also, if you haven’t read Bill Bryson’s “In a Sunburned Country,” you just need to. It’s not new, but it would make a nice winter read with its sunny setting + you will laugh so hard.
