The Draper Report – Mad Men Episode 4 & 5 Recap

Man, these Mad Men recaps are kicking our butts lately. Here’s the deal – with the Downton Abbey recaps, Kristen and I had watched the UK episodes before the US ones aired, giving us time to film at our leisure. (Well, I wouldn’t call it leisure, but you catch my drift…)

Filming directly after Mad Men airs on Sunday nights is kind of a joke, people. It’s just not happening. Crazy kids, preparing for Monday morning work schedules…we just can’t seem to make it work on a weekly basis, BUT we are digging in and doing it for the team. We are COMMITTED to making these stupid videos. Amen.

Long story short, recaps might not be weekly, but we’ll try our best. *fist bump*

Here’s our recap on the past two episodes.

What do you all think about where the plot is heading? Are you loving the storyline? Who else is (stupidly) still in love with Don Draper like me? Did we forget to talk about something really obvious? (Probably.)

I couldn’t wait for this season of Mad Men to start, but I’ve been so depressed by the lack of character development on Don Draper’s part that I haven’t even watched last Sunday’s episode. After the “I pray that you find peace” comment the week before, I’m afraid of what they will do next.

    Is it safe to watch?

I thought that Peggy’s firm won the Heinz Ketchup account too but reading other recaps I found out that neither firm got the deal.

Not sure if you had a chance to listen yet but I posted an episode in the comments of the last recap, of Fresh Air in which Terry Gross interviews Matthew Weiner and it was great and helped make more sense of the first episode (not everything though!) and the entire season. I think you guys would really enjoy it!

What I keep mulling over is that Don is threatened and disgusted by women’s sexuality in general but he seems to really appreciate Joan’s appetite. I can’t figure out what that’s all about, why he accepts her’s and not others. I wonder if it’s because she uses sex like he does – she enjoys it, she is calculating about it and she can separate emotions from it. Perhaps he recognizes that in himself?

Oooh, really good point about Don and Joan! Yes, I read that interview about the first episode… Weiner is definitely spot on.

How did I not know that Kate Spade Saturday even existed. I’m so excited. I think you are my new best friend.

I’ve been loving the Trudy storyline! I’m so proud of her standing up to Pete! Trudy is the woman Betty Draper could never be…
