2013 Resolutions

1. Quiet the noise – I’m hoping to turn the online volume way down this year. Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, Google Reader…it’s just way too easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing and wearing and eating and making. (Not that I think those things aren’t worthy….it’s just that I spend way too much time doing so.) Sometimes I feel completely consumed by my laptop, and come to think of it, that’s just silly. Turning the volume way down, folks.

2. More family time -The Go Mighty grant has been a great way to kick-start the family adventures, but this resolution isn’t about anything grand. I just want to go on lots of family walks, explore our new neighborhood, and enjoy the outdoors as a family. D and I are both homebodies, and we need to step up our game for the kiddos’ sake.

3. Run, run, run – I’m planning to run my first half marathon in April, so I think it’s high time to say goodbye to the treadmill training and get outdoors. I’m just such a creature of habit, and my treadmill runs are nice and predictable. It’s time to hit some trails! (Skeered.)

4. Be a better neighbor -Living in rentals and knowing that we would always be moving on, D and I have never put much effort into getting to know our neighbors. Now that we have bought a home in a neighborhood with wonderful neighbors, I want to spend time getting to know everyone, and I want them to consider me a source of support. (Or at least a person to happy to lend some sugar. Or a beer. Beer is good.)

5. Grow great grub – I have designated a big space in our new backyard as my garden. I have no idea where to start, but I am committed to starting a vegetable and herb garden this year. (And I am asking for all the help and resources you can provide!)

Anyone feeling these resolutions as well? Love to hear what’s on your plate for 2013.

I am also a Southern Californian looking to start a garden with the kids. The weird non-seasons throw me off! I hope to glean some advice right along with you!

Awesome resolutions! Wish it was warmer where I live so I could be running outside too- it really is the best! Makes treadmill runs even easier when you go back inside as well.

excited about a garden! the best garden advice I’ve received is to start small the first time out (limit to a few varieties), and plant what you like to eat but then throw in an oddball, like okra or something (whatever’s not your thing), just to see how it grows and to have fun with it. also, if you don’t grow a citrus tree, bitter midwesterners will revoke your license to live in california (sad winter face).

I’ve got herb garden on my list too. We can share tips! I’m scared because I tend to kill houseplants. Eek.

Hope you have a great year, Whoorl!

A square foot garden is a great place to start. There are good resources online for how to plant one.

Great resolutions. Just wanted to lend some support on the running front; I recently completed C25K entirely on the treadmill in my gym, but after my husband gifted me with a Nike Fuelband, I-phone arm band, and some outdoor Lulu workout gear for Christmas, I figured it was high time to hit the pavement. Let me just say, I have enjoyed running outdoors SO MUCH more than running on the treadmill. The time flies by, the fresh air is invigorating, and nothing beats the feeling of the wind in your hair. And I live in freezing cold Philadelphia. So jealous of your beautiful scenery and temps in Southern CA. Good luck!

Are you going to run the OKC half? I am thinking about running it this spring!

Good luck with your garden! I am horrible at keeping houseplants alive, but we plant tomaotes every year and they are pretty forgiving. Make sure to plant them nice and deep. Use a good potting mix like Baccto and add Tomato Tone to the soil. Water daily when they are still young. Types like Big Beef, Early Girl and Beefmaster are pretty hardy. If you like cherries, try something like a Sweet 100 or Cherry 100. They are like candy. Also make sure to get nice sturdy cages. The good ones are more expensive, but they will last over the years.

Herbs are really easy to grow. They can even be done in a separate planter.

Cucumbers are also easy. Just provide them with a trellis so they have some vertical space to grow.

Sevin dust can be sprinkled on the plants to help keep insects away.

It may be a bit early for gardening advice, but hopefully this is helpful when the time comes! :-)

I think it’s awesome that you’re resolving to run a half marathon this year! One of these years I’m going to be brave enough to put a race on my list (likely a 5k), but until then, I’m living vicariously through other bloggers.

Congratulations on signing up for you first half! That is a great challenge. I would love to help you get there, I am a personal trainer with much experience training clients for their first half marathon. Let me know if you are interested!

Congrats lady on putting it down!
(We’re growing a “pickle garden” this year — I’m taking all that advice to start small.)

These all sound great. I live in a 4 unit apt building and we are very social with each other. Good neighbors can completely enhance your life. Hope you find some good ones and have fun with it.

This is what I will be working on. http://oururbanplayground.com/?p=1044

I have been working with a nutritionalist and today I started my new diet. That post will be coming soon too.

    Happy New year to you!

I agree so much with the first resolution. Trying myself to quiet the noise and not worry so much what others doing or what I think could be a fabulous thing I might be missing out on as the best place is the present, hanging with my family. Trying to “keep it simple”. Had to remind myself of that just yesterday. :) good luck and congrats on the new house. We live in a great neighborhood and it really makes life more fun when you know your neighbors.

I hear you about turning down the volume, quieting the noise. I’m kind of falling off the wagon today. Commenting on a blog post kind of gives that away. It’s all about baby steps, yes? *sigh*
