The Braid

in Hair

This braid is beyond. It’s a twirling barefoot in the damp grass braid. A flowing, flowered maxi skirt braid. A sun kissed shoulders with rosy, glowing cheeks braid. I want to make out with it.

Are you feeling me (up)?

Not the easiest look to achieve, but advanced braiders need to jump on this look stat. (And send me a pic if you do it! I might have to try this weekend.)

Step 1: Add texture/volume to hair. (Hairspray or dry shampoo or rollers or mousse or flipping hair upside down or whatever floats your boat.)

Step 2: Divide hair into two sections down the middle of the head, and begin to create two French braids, starting at the top of the head to the base of the neck

Step 3: From the base of the neck, create two fishtails braids, and secure them with clear elastics, leaving some length on the ends loose

Step 4: Lightly rough up hair at the top of the head, pulling a few pieces loose with your fingers, and finish by lightly applying a dab of smoothing cream to the ends.

    I love love love braided updos and I think the fishtail braid is most excellent, but there is something about the double french braid that says “polygamist compound” to me. Sister wife chic!

    I’m not a fan of these braids at all. I like the effect that it creates in the front and around the crown, but the actual braid is just too Little House on the Prairie minus the hairspray for me.

    This is such a stupid question. I mean, I like braids and all and have been known to do a braid to get the hair at the front out of my face but this has nothing to do with that. My question:

    How did you get the pictures all fancy like?

    See? Dumb question.

    I have a set of photos that I need in a similar format and it’s killing me that I can’t figure out how.

    I wish, wish, wish I could fishtail braid! My hairdresser does this one on me that starts on one side of my head, behind my ear and then you fishtail braid to the other ear and to the end of the braid. Next, you loosen hair out of the braid so it is deconstructed, but still attached. Fold then end into a bun on a side, pin, and it is amazing. Pretty and a little edgy. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to fishtail so I can’t do it on myself.

    Oh, I do like this! I have naturally curly hair but I think I could pull it off if I let it dry and add some dry shampoo. My mom knows how to french braid and fishtail so I’m going to have her try this on me! I could never pull this off on my own!

    @Mary Sue, Fish tail braiding is pretty easy! You divide the hair in two parts and each time you “braid” you pull a smaller piece from one of the bigger pieces to make the third part of the braid. I hope that makes sense!

    @Jessica: I have been wanting to be able to fishtale braid since I read the Klutz’s book of braids or something or other when I was ten. Now I feel like an idiot for not being able to do it earlier (but thanks for the tip!)

    that’s what that’s called? We have a version of that hairdo in our house that I call the “it’s 110F outside and something needs to be done with my 4 y.o.’s mop of hair”:
    send child to bed with wet hair
    next morning wake child up
    do not brush hair
    scrape into a french braid
    secure with elastic
    let child run around at daycare for 8 hours

    DONE!

    For my daughter’s two year check up, I did her hair in her first set of french braids. She set still long enough, which I couldn’t believe and LOVED it! I was kindof impressed how fast it all came back since I hadn’t french braided my hair in forever. Then I was kindof jealous of how good it looked – ha! Maybe I will try this one on her and me too!!

    ok so i tried it!!!!! but man it hurts the arms to fishtail my loooong hair. i need to do it again and snap pics for you, but it came out cute!
