Battle of the Rollers, Part Two – BaByliss Hairsetter

Battle of the Rollers part one here.

After trying the Caruso Hairsetter, I decided it was time to give the BaByliss Pro 30 Professional Hairsetter a spin. The BaByliss rollers are similar to what I’ve used in the past – heated rollers that create curl. This set includes 30 rollers: 6 small (3/4″), 8 medium (1″), 8 large (1 .25″), and 8 Jumbo (1.5″). I mainly used the jumbo size, but ran out and had to use the large on the bottom section of my hair. As for the unit itself, I liked how these rollers were double insulated – they fit down into the the casing, which helped to maintain temperature.

I rolled my hair in the same fashion as I did with the Caruso rollers. The one thing I noticed right off the bat is that I couldn’t take as much time rolling each individual section as I did with the Caruso. Holding these rollers for longer than a few seconds was uncomfortable due to the heat, so it made my rolled sections a little less perfect.

Notice the tissue on the right side. I forgot how hot rollers can burn your ears!

I left the rollers in until they cooled, removed, sprayed with a bit of hairspray and separated the curls in the same manner as the Caruso hairsetter review. Here was the result.

The curls were fairly similar to the Caruso, methinks. (Although the BaByliss rollers seemed to leave a little more frizz. You can see it on the left side of the above photo.)

I like the look of the Caruso curls better. They look smoother and more defined.

I like the look of the Caruso curls better, but having used Caruso before, my prone-to-frizz hair was frizzier using Caruso because of the moisture. Also, I’ve found that my Caruso curls didn’t last very long. I’ve been tempted to try the regular hot rollers again. Did you notice which curls lasted longer?

i like the Caruso pic better too, but i’ve never really tried hot rollers before and would love to give it a try!

I like the Caruso better as well. Much smoother. I am so glad you are doing this little test. I am growing my hair out currently and am not exactly happy with my rollers. I need new ones, but do not want to waste money on ones that will not work to my liking.

Both look lovely. The Caruso curls look fuller, but I’m wondering which curls lasted longer.

I like the Caruso better by a smidge but it doesn’t look all that different. I’d love a chance to win as I’m growing my hair out and need things to do with it.

I’m joining the Caruso bandwagon. Seems like with the steam they’d be better for your hair anyway?

  • Melissa

Honestly, your hair looks fabulous in both pictures. I can’t even concentrate on finding a difference because I am just in complete awe of HOW MUCH HAIR you have… heh :)

My hair is fine and flat, so these curlers would be great for trying to create more volume!

The Caruso does look a little better/different. Although they both look great!

I think I like the Caruso better, but love the effortless curls they both create!

I’m a big fan of the clips with the BaByliss!

Maybe I’d be tempted to curl my hair more often with good rollers!

I’ve wanted to try hot rollers again after seeing all of the new hair trends lately, but just don’t know which way to spend my money. So basically thank you for having this give-away! I hope I win one of them! :)

I think maybe the Babybliss curls look a little more volumized? Either way – very close, and I’d love to have a set!

I would love to try the steam rollers although i’m thinking it won’t work on my fro. Love to try it though!

I like both, but wonder if my naturally wavy/frizzy hair would object to the steam of the Caruso, so I’d try the Babyliss first.

  • Heather Reid

    November 9, 2010 at 4:59 pm

I think I like the Babyliss curlers better. I feel like they have a nicer shape and volume. They both look lovely, though!

It’s hard to say- you and your curls look really great in both! I guess if I had to choose and I really scrutinized each pic, I would say the caruso, because there is no frizz.

  • Ami

    November 9, 2010 at 6:42 pm

I like the Caruso ones better, and I’m with you on being glad curls are back! I straightened my hair this weekend and felt like it was so limp.

I think I actually like the Caruso curls better. They seem more defined, and frizz-less. Also, those clips would drive me crazy. I still use the traditional pins so that the curlers are set firmly on my head. I’ve tried those clips and they always seemed too loose. I would also be interested to know how long the curls stayed in and if you use any product on your hair before you roll it.

Hands down the Carson rollers! I love the fact that they are aren’t as damaging to your hair too because of the steam! Beautiful curls!

  • Halley Trembath

    November 9, 2010 at 10:28 pm

I would think the rollers that dont make your fingers hurt are probably a better bet! I like the curl of both but I think someone would be more likely to use the one with the more tolerable temperature more often.

Love them both- thanks for the tutorial.

  • Danielle

    November 10, 2010 at 5:54 am

You’re beautiful either way! I love both looks actually. I like the smoothness of the Caruso pic, but I like the less volume look of the BaByliss pic. I adore the color and shine of your hair too.

I’ve been wanting to try hot roller again. :)

Love them both! I wondered with my hair being a bit longer than yours, but similar thickness if rollers would be the way to go – will have to give them a shot now for sure! Gorgeous.

Your hair is truly gorgeous. These rollers seem worth a go! Do you have to have a particular hair cut? Layers etc. to achieve this look?

    November 10, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Yeah, I’m with the others – I think I liked the Caruso better. I just don’t like the shape of the curls with the Babyliss as much…

    Both look pretty great!

  • Jessica

    November 10, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Looks like the Caruso was easier to use and created less frizz. I’m with some of the other readers, though, wondering which curls lasted longer. Spill it, please!

    November 10, 2010 at 2:53 pm

They look nearly the same but there is something to be said for rollers that don’t burn your ears….

  • Stephanie

    November 10, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Hoo boy, it’s things like this that make me pine for my looong hair!!
I prefer the shape of the curls produced by the hot rollers, but that could just be a total fluke based on the size of the rollers or the section of hair curled.
I haven’t used rollers since I was in high school – would be fun to try again!

    November 11, 2010 at 7:31 am

Hmmm, this does look like a nice set of roller, it would be a nice upgrade from my current travel set I use. I never get Barbie hair though from hot rollers only the one time with Caruso.

I like the Caruso Curlers. My teenage daughter has baby fine hair and has not had good luck with curling irons. We’ve been looking for alternatives. I would love to win a set to give her for Christmas.

Honestly, I can’t tell the difference-your hair looks fabulous with both. But-I remember trying to use my mom’s old school hot rollers and trying not to burn your fingers was always priority #1! So, I’m going to go with the Caruso.

  • Jorgan

    November 11, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I agree, I like the Caruso better. It looks a little less frizzy and healthier.

I like the Caruso curls better. And it seems more manageable to me for some reason.

  • Yvonne H.

    November 11, 2010 at 6:56 pm

I like both. The Caruso gave you more of a loose curl, while the Babyliss curls seemed a little tighter and more defined. But very pretty either way.
