10 Questions

1. Hitting the running trail again, and I’m dying to know what improvements have been made with Couch to 5k apps since I first completed it 4 years ago. Are there now ways to sync the program with your iPod while listening to your own music? Last time I did it, I was forced to listen to a podcast with shitty techno and creepy voiceovers. What’s the word, bird?

2. I need a new tinted moisturizer. I really like the one I use now (Cosmedicine Honest Face), but I’m wondering if something else out there might truly rock my world. (You know, since I turned 36 this past weekend. I am officially MID-TO-LATE THIRTIES. gahhhh age spots) I’m not a fan of Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, but am wondering about Tarte Smooth Operator, Josie Maran Tinted Moisturizer and the Philosophy one. Do tell.

3. I feel like I’m not spending quality time with Wito. It’s hard to get out with little miss Nappy McNapperson, so I’m desperate for things to do around the house with him that don’t involve iPhone apps or re-enacting scenes from Cars or REALLY LOUD NOISES. Any suggestions?

4. My blog is ugly and I’m currently dreaming up a little makeover. Any features that that you would like to see here? Would you still like me if I only wrote about lip gloss everyday? Tired mom = lip gloss blog fodder to the max.

5. Will the 4-month sleep regression please leave me the hell alone? And why the time change, Daylight Savings Master (aka Satan)?

6. Would you hate me if I injected botulism into my forehead? This gigantic wrinkle crevice between my brows is atrocious. (Chill, mom. I’m not going to get Botox. Although I dream about it on a weekly basis.)

7. Did you see my Battle of the Rollers on Hair Thursday? Steam vs. Heat!

8. Have you ever started to chug a glass of water, only to realize it is Ginger Ale/Sprite/Club Soda mid-swallow? RAUNCH.

9. I’ve made it halfway through Boot Camp! 5:30am, 3 times a week. It ain’t messing around, but guess who’s (barely) back in her pre-pregnancy jeans?

10. If you had to live in the same house as a Nick Jr. character, who would it be? I would choose Kai-Lan. She’s generally upbeat and helpful, her grandpa is hella wise, and she could teach me Chinese! (Moose and Zee, you are always welcome in the Whoorl Household too.)

YES! The c25k app is great now. I get to rock out to my own music and none of that crappy techno stuff (unless you’re into that kind of thing).

The fact that you are back in your jeans (yea you!) makes me not want to help you…but…art! Embrace arts and crafts with Wito. Art and puzzles keep me sane among the iPhone games and Cars. And dude…I love the LM tinted! Kind of sad you are hating in it!

Yeah, there’s an app in the app store (if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch) that you can get that will just put the transitions over whatever music you’re already playing. I think it’s like, two dollars or maybe three, and is an icon that’s white text on a brown background. It’s really great – I used it last year when I first started running and am about to start it again as soon as I can get off my duff and get moving (the little one is two months old in a couple of days).

Bobbi Brown tinted moisturizer — Love love love. And I hate all things tinted moisturizer/foundationy. So that’s really saying something.

My Couch to 5K app lets you listen to your own music. Created by Felt Tip, Inc. and cost $2.99. I quit after week four, but not because of the app! :)

I use the Tarte tinted moisturizer. I like it. It’s not too heavy but it provides a nice evening out of skin. Sometimes I just mix it with my daily moisturizer if I want even less coverage. I also have the Philosophy one – but it does this weird thing where it becomes more solid as you put it on. Definitely a heavier kind of coverage. I think I would only use that one in the winter when I was feeling super pale.

And, OH, I have been dreaming of Botox for my scary between the eyebrows wrinkle too. Now I can see it even when I am NOT furrowing my brow and that is truly sadmaking.

    2. I use Olay’s tinted moisturizer and I really like it. It’s light and smells nice. Oh, and drugstore cheap is a bonus!

    3. Pick up a holiday craft magazine and let Wito pick one or three projects. I do crafts with my kids and they are really blossoming creatively. I love to see the sense of accomplishment in their little faces. (My oldest is 6 and my youngest is 2, so we help each other and learn patience all at once!)

OMG four month sleep regression, now well into FIVE month sleep regression. When will this ever end?

I’ve been trying to start boot camp, but with an unpredictable baby, a preschooler who thinks 4:45 is morning and a husband who starts getting ready for work at 5:15 and can’t really parent while shaving in the shower, I don’t know what to do!

I’ve tried them all and believe it or not, I love L’Oreal Visible Lift. On my second bottle and that says a lot coming from this product junkie. And…it’s cheap!

I’ve got all sorts of answers today:

    2. I was a Laura Mercier worshiper for years and recently was talked into trying Stilla Tinted Moisturizer and really like it. Good coverage while still feeling very light.

    3. Charlie is really digging some one on one art time these days, mainly drawing robots, dinosaurs or better yet, a combination of the two. Now admittedly in our house that falls to his father since he went to art school and all, but I think he’d be just as happy with my crappy stick figures since it really is just about the undivided attention.

    8. Yes and gross! Especially when warmish and flat.

    9. Rock it, Mama!

    10. Maybe Olivia, although I don’t know her well enough to make that decision at this point.

    1 – Nada
2- I make my own tinted moisturizer when I require it(read hung over) by mixing a tiny bit of foundation (Cover Girl) with my moisturizer Spectro for Acne prone skin. Otherwise I use MAC products.
3- Making home made play dough, finger paints or Magic Mud, baking muffins
4- I loved the header you had when you were pregnant with Wito with the animated you with the belly and glasses
5- 4 month sleep regression was the biggest fucking tease ever. I thought I had my life back somewhat and even had energy for the horizontal polka and BAM it was back to new born hell sleep deprivation
6-I wouldn’t hate you, because I am serious about getting a boob job when I know for sure I am done having babies.
    7-No I didn’t
8-Yes, I made this mistake low and behold while I was staying with a friend in Huntington Beach but replace glass with bottle and sprite with warm Mailbu rum. Wasn’t expecting that!
9- You must be getting up when she does
10- I don’t watch Nick Jr. We have Tree House up here. I think the Tombly Boos tree house from In the Night Garden would be an awesome place to live. Who wouldn’t want slides in their house??

    OK, Questions 1, 2 7 and 9 I can comment upon…

    1. Another BIG yes for the Felt Tip C25K App. (brown icon with 5K white writing on it). It rocks. Your music can run in the background, it has great alarms when you change from walking to running. Its great. I am back at week 3 after getting to week 5 then breaking my foot this summer.

    2. HATE the Tarte Smooth Operator with a passion. Its very yellow. Laura Mercier was too chalky for me – so my quest continues but as much as I like Tarte as a company – big no to their products for the most part.

    7. Love the roller review. Am in the market for some new ones and was leaning towards the Caruso. maybe I’ll get lucky and win won instead :-)

    9. Yah for you! Though me=totally jealous. Have 25 pounds to loose and am stuck on the scale.

If there’s a two-for-one special to deal with the the “gigantic wrinkle crevice between my brows”? Call me. We’ll split the difference. (Ha!)

  • Molly Grierson

    November 9, 2010 at 8:14 pm

I have to say I can so relate to the “I like this product a lot and it seems to fit my needs in every way, so I clearly need to find something new and different,” sentiment. The painful trials of a product junkie…how does one ever know that the single un-tried mascara (un-tried because you were so stupidly faithful to your “favorite”) isn’t the best? Cosmedicine is actually in my top five but it looks like Sephoa is -gasp!- phasing out the brand? Josie Maran is my current obsession-love, love, love the dewy (not oily) argan glow. Bobbi Brown is also great and my #1, always-go-back-to pick is Boscia. Tarte is a yucky orange paste disaster, never tried Philosophy. Good luck!

    3. Does he like puzzles? May be a good option. My 4 year old seems to enjoy them. Bonus: Quiet!

    6. I wouldn’t hate you. I want my gigantic wrinkle crevice to go away too.

    10. Anyone but Ruby from Max & Ruby. She has really let that whole “Mom is away” thing go to her head.

I second the Origins rec. I love the hell out of that Vita-zing. Also, the eye cream in that line works too.

DJ Lance Rock. I know everyone thinks he’s totally creepy but I don’t.Or maybe Plex since he’s a robot and could be reprogrammed to clean my house and do dishes.

I have the Personal Running Trainer app. It has a bunch of different programs you can buy to go along with it – original app is free, with add ons ranging from 1.99 to 4.99 depending on the program – BUT you set up your own playlist.

I’ve tried many a tinted moisturizer. Here’s my thoughts on them, for my personal use. Your mileage may vary. :)

-I am quite happy with the Oil Free Laura Mercier Tinted moisturizer. Just throwing that out there, in case it means you’d like to discount my other opinions.

-The Tarte Smooth Operator goes on nicely at first, with nice coverage for a tinted moisturizer, but then it ends up oxidizing and turning a very noticeable yellow/orange on me. I am a fair girl, so I’m already using the lightest shade. Harumph. It got donated to a slightly darker complected friend of mine.

-The Stila tinted moisturizer is also nice, and doesn’t oxidize. My main problem with it is that it’s VERY moisturizing, and I don’t really need that feature. I end up feeling like I am all clammy on my face. If you have normal to dry skin, it would probably be great.

-When I wasn’t using the LM product, I used Bobbi Brown’s tinted moisturizer. It is great, just maybe one slight smidge sheerer than the LM coverage, and I kinda need a little help.

Also, if your blog turned into a lip gloss only blog, I would be in heaven! I want to write that blog myself, but I am in med school and I am just not able to spend the time to do it!! Hence, I would love to read yours instead. :)

My son William and I made sock puppets a few weekends ago and it was a great time! He got to contribute to each sock “character” and using toddler-friendly supplies like sticky felt shapes allowed him to really pitch in. It’s also a great way to get rid of those socks that have “lost” their mate!

I use Benefit You Rebel tinted moisturizer. It’s not too heavy, actually moisturizes and gives a nice, light coverage.

Again with the Origins moisturizer- VitaZing. It is very subtle and stays smooth (no caking or smearing, ever). I’d love a lipgloss blog, seriously, anything you wanna write is ok by me.

I have used a Neutragena tinted moisturizer in the past and was farely happy with it.

I second the vote for crafts (sock puppets, paper bag puppets) with your little man. Toddlers go ape shit over pom poms, googly eyes, glue sticks and felt. Shoot, I do too and I’m 34.

I am dangerously close to shooting botulism between my eyeballs.

I’d totally be down with living with Oswald and Weinie. Oswald and his many hands would be super helpful in wrangling children and he knows how to share.

I’m sorry to tell you the 4 month sleep regression will make you it’s bitch. I am in the throes of it right now and I hate that wiley bitch! I’m hoping she moves on to someone else’s house soon. Good luck!

    4. I love posts just like this! And I love your “I Think I’m in Love” series. However, I’m going to be honest…whatever you post here, I’m going to read because I’m a fan :)
    5. I hate sleep regressions with a passion. We went through every sleep regression known to man and if there’s one for 24 months we are going through it now. And don’t even get me started on DST. If yesterday he woke up at 4:30a and today was 5a does that mean its getting better?
    10. I think I might be hated for this but the show I actually enjoy watching is Blue’s Clues with Steve (not Joe). So I’m gonna go with that whole cast of characters…I mean you have Mr Salt & Mrs Pepper so they can cook, Slippery Soap & Tickety Tock no explanation needed, and Blue seems like a great dog to have who can let herself out and be responsible for her meals. Steve seems like a funny guy…so there you have it!

I am smitten with the Jouer luminizing moisture tint (or whatever it’s called). It’s really lovely in terms of color and feel. Very “you only better” and silky feeling. Strongly recommend and I am not typically one for face make-up. Plus you can occasionally find it on Gilt Groupe!

  • Mary Sue

    November 10, 2010 at 5:27 pm

I also use the oil-free tinted moisturizer from Laura Mercier. Not sure why I switched, because I have kind of dry skin, but it is mucho better. I do have to keep two shades, because one is too pale and the other is too brown (it is weird they don’t make a pink shade for my red-head skin). If you find a better one, I would love to hear it.

Second, I was JUST thinking about that stupid line between my eyebrows as I got my passport picture taken today. I often try to massage it out because it is intense! In my head, I don’t think it really counts if you just botox that line. I mean, I don’t want to get my WHOLE forehead botoxed. Just that one line. And, it would decrease my scowling which seems like a positive thing for everyone.

    1) Thank you. I want to get started, but I’ve “never” ran before. This is just what I need.
    2) No idea, but also need.
    3) Lots of reading… and talking about the stories/pictures.
    4) Your blog is still new to me! Loving it so far:).
    5) Yes.
    6) Okay. I can totally relate (I blame it on stupidly not wearing sunglasses forever in my 20’s… and for working way too hard- and getting way too intense._So, I bought Frownies (I guess they were on Oprah(??). Haven’t tried yet; husband thinks I’m crazy.)
    7) Not yet, but will do!
    8) I don’t believe I have.
    9) Ditto to #1… need to do something active, SOON.
    10) Hands down, Little Bill.

3: i like arts and crafts that don’t leave much of a mess! the alex kits are great and inexpensive. you could let him pick a couple at the store and that would give you a few wks’ worth of projects.
    also, baking!

Estee Lauder Daywear Plus Sheer Tint Release Formula. You don’t have to pick a shade, it does the work for you. It always gives me just enough glow. In the winter months I do use another moisturiuzer underneath just because my skin is too dry. I love it – been using it for years and it’s my go-to in case I need to run out. This + mascara and I’m set.

Do the ‘Tox! I love it! Although it’s awfully nice I get it for free from my job- truthfully, I don’t think I’m that far along into my line abyss that I’d get it if I had to pay for it. But it’s good preventive medicine. That said, you will have a few injections on each side even though there’s only one line you want to get rid of because the superrcilli corrugator muscle can be fairly beefy (facial muscle-wise) and that line is the end result of that muscle flexing along the medial aspects of your eyebrows.

Love reading all the notes about tinted moisturizer since the rosacea on my nose and forehead has me searching for something that doesn’t cover too much on my cheeks but helps the blotchiness a bit.

I actually got Botox for the “11’s” on my forehead last year. It worked great for about six months (three were because I’d quit making the face that caused that because of the three where the muscles were paralyzed)

I loved Botox but it was 300 bucks and I’m not sure it’s worth that. I do hate that I have those but they’re my only wrinkles so I guess I’m okay with saving my cash for shoes!

two answers from me, infrequent commenter:

I like Clinique City Block SPF 25 for a tinted moisturizer. There’s only one tint, but I think you and I have about the same natural skin tone. It only contains physical sunblock, not chemical, and for my acne-prone skin, that works better.

And hell yes on the Botox. It makes me happy. Not in a vanity, oh look, I don’t have creases in my forehead way. It makes me happy in a how sad can you be if you can’t frown way. Totally worth it. Up there with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc in terms of Mommy’s Little Helper.

I use the Boscia tinted moisturizer. I was on search of one over the summer and the girl at Sephora turned me onto this one, and I love it (although it is the first I’ve ever tried). It’s nice because it is from a skin care line, not a make-up line.
