Errands, Shopping, Swaddles, Missing Teeth and Ass-Kicking

Quite a massive posting lull last week, yes? My mom came to visit the kiddos for three days! Besides enjoying some mother/daughter time, do you know how thrilling it is to run errands with another adult in the car? Not only will your conversations include phrases other than “please don’t throw those raisins on the seat,” and “no really, LET’S PLAY THE QUIET GAME FOR REAL THIS TIME, ” but you can actually LEAVE the kids in the car with said adult while darting in and out of stores. No stroller folding/unfolding, waking up the baby, keeping the toddler in line, etc. GENIUS, I TELL YOU.  Anyone interested in hanging out with me in my car while I run errands during the day?

**********

I’m completely obsessed with these damn Groupon-type websites as of late. $20 off of $40! Salon treatments for half off! Look, I’m saving so much money!

Except that I’m NOT because I wouldn’t be spending in the first place had I not known about these sites. Gah.

(However, $20 off of $40 at The Body Shop! Today only!)

(And $25 for $50 of kids’ merchandise at Shop Zoolu! PEER PRESSURE.)

Wita has been sleeping super long stretches at night since 6 weeks old. I can now tell you this without fearing the jinx because, well, she isn’t anymore. She enjoys going to sleep at 7pm (good!) and waking up at 4am (BAD). What we assumed was a growth spurt starting two weeks ago has either turned into the Longest Growth Spurt Known To Man, or most likely, her newfound ability to shimmy her way out of the swaddle. Our pediatrician recommended de-swaddling Wito around 4 months old (remember the crazed bird arm-flapping?) and wouldn’t you know? Wita will be four months old this week. Damn you, de-swaddling! Damn you for these horrendous circles under my eyes!

I can’t believe I forgot to tell you the details of our trip to Disneyland on the the hottest day in Orange County history. It was a little bit like hell on earth, and we all know how my body reacts to heat. Wita was reminiscent of a hot potato all jammed up in her stroller and Wito was dripping sweat the entire visit. However, believe it or not, the heat was not the star of the story. It turns out while I was nursing Wita at the Baby Center (a visit to the Baby Center is a MUST while visiting Disneyland with small children), Wito pulled out Dangler #2 from last year’s run-in with a steel baker’s rack. It went a little something like this.

leisurely walking through Fantasyland en route to ‘It’s a Small World’ ride

Wito: (nonchalantly) Here, daddy. Hold this.

Wito drops a bloody tooth into D’s palm

D: Uhhhhhhhhhh.

End scene.

Please to enjoy my bloody tooth hole!

Front teeth are really overrated.

I started a month-long bootcamp this morning. Two words. Running Drills.

OMG.

I’m totally addicted to Groupon and Living Social, too. Massages, half price dinner and coupons, OH MY.

Wito looks adorable. Good luck with boot camp!

I would bet the horrendous sleep isn’t a result of lack of swaddle but rather the 4 month sleep regression of doom. See askmoxie.org for details and commisseration: http://www.askmoxie.org/2006/02/qa_what_are_sle.html

I love how nonchalant Wito was about his tooth falling out. Priceless.

Now I have to go buy that Body Shop deal. DAMN YOU.

Ok, the fact that Rt’s teeth are going to look like Dangler #2 in a mere 4 hours is FREAKING me out. It’s a hole…in his gum…..AGHHHHH.

Thanks for the heads up, really. I needed it. Have to be the strong one while sitting there watching. Hubs will be with younger. He offered. MEN ARE WEAKLINGS!

De-swaddling. Good luck, sister. I double wrapped before I gave up on both. :)

So is she up for the day at 4:00, or going back down? Because my son was doing a 7-4, 4-7 thing for a long time and it was totally doable. But if she’s up for the day at 4:00 . . . you have my sympathies. Also, some a**vice: the Halo Sleep Sack Swaddles have a big piece of really strong velcro that really traps the little buggers. We didn’t unswaddle until J started rolling over at six months.

She’ll go back down for a little over an hour. I finish nursing her around 4:20, put her down and then she wakes at 6:15ish. In fact, I’m not even sure she’s actually full-on asleep during that time. It just sucks because I can’t fall back asleep easily – usually doze off around 5:30 and then I’m up again within 45 minutes.

This happened with Wito too and we let him CIO (which worked in 2 days), but I’m being a chicken shit this time around. ;)

We stopped swaddling right around four months because she was too big for the miracle blanket and our sleep has steadily gone downhill in the past few weeks. She caught the preschool germs that my three year old brought home and learned to roll over all at the same time. She’s also not napping well and she used to take multiple long naps a day. You know things aren’t going well when your three year old sleeps better than your infant. All this to say, I feel ya. *YAWN*

Oh, and I’ve given some serious thought to paying a teenaged neighbor to ride around in the car with me while I run all of my little errands. I could get so much done in an hour!

I have a now 6 month old who was sleeping from 2.5 months 12 hours feeding and sleeping another 2 hours. And then… AND THEN the four month sleep regression hit! Google it, it might make some sense to you. Also you can still wrap them lightly in a way that is hard to explain. But at 6 months our bubba is still being wrapped so that her arms can be up near her head but not crazy fly away arms. It works well for this regression period and only in the last week we have started to leave one arm out!
Let me know if you would like me to try and explain the wrap, I can email you.

Random question, what blankets did you use for swaddling? We’re adopting a baby in December and I need to stock up on some good, quality ones since I can ONLY survive those first 3 months with a swaddled baby! I keep hearing about these muslin ones? After thinking we were done with kids and giving away all our baby gear in ’08, I’m starting from square one!

Awe the infamous de-swaddle phase; the end of a sleeping era. I feel for you. I really do. Oh and the under eye dark circle memories. Yikes {point the camera at the baby ONLY honey}.

During those times I always liked to fall back on the saying:

“Everything, both good and bad, is just a stage”.

The end of the swaddle sucked for us too. He just kept wiggling out and then smacking himself in his face with his awful gross motor skills. I ended up using duct tape. I kid you not. I swaddled him and then put a small piece of duct tape on the flap of blanket on his back. It made the swaddle last just long enough until he could master bringing that fist to his mouth without giving himself a black eye.
For a gal from the trailer park….duct tape fixes everything.
    Best,
    Tina
P.S. Don’t turn me into child protective services. LOL

My annual January trip is fast approaching; set me up in the car with your beautiful babies and you can run a thousand errands if you want. ;)

Hooray for Boot Camp! I mean, besides the whole “can’t sit or stand without wincing” deal.
