hair thursday makeover 90

Meet Anders.

Anders’ hair:

A tad bit straggly

From his “email:”

Dear Sarah (Mom),

I’m in need of a new look for summer. Don’t get me wrong – I like my longer hair and get compliments on it, but it’s really bugging me now that the weather is heating up. I mean, I’m a busy guy! Swimming, playdates, birthday parties, park visits…all of this hair on my neck makes me a little crazy. Plus, I soon will be in possession of the coveted title of Big Brother. I take that designation very seriously.

And really, can we talk about the UPS store incident last week? I strutted in with my banged-up knees and monster trucks and the employee remarked to you “what a beautiful girl” I was. REALLY? What’s up with that? Now granted, that UPS chick looked like she might be missing a few marbles, but still? A GIRL? I’M ALMOST FOUR.

Please send me into the summer months in style! Oh and please, no clipper cuts. I am a Man of Distinguished Style, you know.

Well, Anders, you have come to the right place. I will have you looking dapper in no time.

My issue with Anders’ hair is that although I like it longer, it tends to look a little stringy. And although it would be a breeze to get out the good ol’ clippers, that happened once and it just did NOT work out. Trust me. The super short cut did not suit him AT ALL.

So what do you do? I knew I wanted to take the sides and the back much shorter, but leave his bangs longer in the front to keep the overall style from appearing too short. Lo and behold, I saw this child in the J. Crew catalog and was instantly smitten.

I loved the messiness, the longer bangs and the fact that the sides and back were much shorter for the summer months. But most of all? I liked that it wasn’t your run-of-the-mill preschool boy haircut.

I emailed the photo to my stylist and told her we were coming in ASAP.

Let’s stop right here. I know some of you are asking yourself a few questions. Namely:

1. Why is this woman searching for haircuts for her 3 1/2-year-old boy?

2. Why is she emailing photos to her stylist of potential haircuts for her 3 1/2-year-old boy?

3. Does she really request her stylist (who doesn’t usually cut children’s hair) to cut and style her 3 1/2-year-old’s hair?

And my answer to you is:

So! Check it out!

Look at that hunk of love!

And the best part? You can make the style all funky or just let it chill out.

Another Hair Thursday success, don’t you think?

(How beautiful is that boy? Yeah yeah yeah, I might be a LITTLE biased…)

OMG, love this so much. And this might sound super dumb, but (not having children or really any preschool boys in my life), I had never thought about how to upgrade a kid’s cut without making it into something that required a bunch of work, you know?

    Anyway, ADORABLE. The End.

I kinda wondered when you posted your last family photo why you had let his hair get so long. Good for you for injecting some style into your son’s life. Maybe if my mom had worked with a stylist all the pictures from my childhood wouldn’t include me in such a bad hairstyle. While I really don’t like children, I’m always glad to see a mom bringing them to the stylist and getting them a decent haircut.

Ha! So cute, and I was completely thrown by your use of his given name. I just picture you calling him Wito all the time.

  • sarah

    May 27, 2010 at 12:50 pm

I wish I could spend time thinking about what hip cut to get my preschool boy, and actually do it. But I’m too lazy. So his gorgeous thick shiny rich brown hair is currently less than half an inch long thanks to me and my drug store issue clippers.

I’m in awe of your dedication to good hair.

If only you could do a children’s hair website! My poor 3 yr old son has similar issues to Anders, but with super super thick hair. I love it longer but poor kid gets soo hot. And my 1 yr old daughter has fine curly hair that I have no idea what to do with. She hates it in her eyes, so it’s always pulled back, but it keeps breaking. I’m NOT cutting bangs. I’m sure I’m not the only mommma with these dilemmas.

p.s. I may not have a website about hair, but I also take my daughter (almost 3) to my stylist and bring photos of how I would like it to look. Call me crazy (my husband does), but I must say, she has the best hair in mother’s day out!!!

That last pic of him is SO GOOD! Love the haircut! Jack got mistaken for a girl the other day and it was the same sorta deal..I mean dude had a jackalope brown t-shirt on and khaki cargo shorts. I’m pretty sure its the curls he has. I just really hate to cut his hair right now when 6 months ago he didn’t hardly even have hair. We worked hard to grow this hair people!

And can I just say, please, as a hair icon, do your best to eradicate the Prince Valiant haircut for boys. I can’t believe people willingly do that to their children.

That is the cutest little boys cut (and little boy) I’ve ever seen (but don’t let my nephews see this comment!!) Just adorable! I just had my 2yr old little girl’s hair cut for all the same reasons – namely it was getting too long around her ears and neck for a warm summer…now she has a super cute pixie cut and it makes me smile!! Maybe we could set up Addie and Anders….kinda has a ring to it, don’t ya think!?!?

  • Michelle

    May 27, 2010 at 10:54 pm

Holy crap. Love love love. I need to bookmark this post in case I ever have a boy. Little boy hair confuses me but this is so…right!

And yes, he’s such the cutie pie!

This was a great post! Loved it. Anders is a cutie. I wish my boys could grow their hair a little longer, but my older one twists his all the time and my younger one has two competing cowlicks in the back of his head. They look a mess with longer hair.

  • Rebecca (Bearca)

    May 28, 2010 at 12:10 pm

He could not be more darling, Sarah. I think you are onto something with this preschool hair feature!

So funny—I brought pics of the same J.Crew boy to my stylist for my son’s recent haircut. What a bunch of cute guys!

  • andrea

    May 28, 2010 at 3:20 pm

It is a great cut, very similar to Charlie’s latest. Our issue is that C has extremely thick hair with all sorts of swirlies and cowlicks so unless we want to buzz it (NO WAY) he has to go with the longer shaggier style to weigh it down. His last cut was with a new stylist and she finally did what I’ve asked all that came before her to do with his hair, thank goodness!

    May 28, 2010 at 4:02 pm

I know he’s a BOY, and his hair is cut and styled for a KID, but I am seriously considering getting “The Wito” cut.

The huge chunk of shoulder length hair my five month old has in his grasp right now may be influencing this decision. Plus, it really is a super cute cut!

I stopped on by to get some ideas for myself. I love the cut on Anders. He is rocking it. Wish I had done some more research when I got my son’s haircut. It was getting a little long as per his father. I thought he was rocking the Justin Bieber/Zack Efron look. Now he just looks like your run of the mill toddler with short/messy hair. *sigh*

Thank you so much for this site and the pics!! My son Xavier has (always had) very thick hair … he has had a salon hairdresser cut his hair since his first birthday – and has always had to have his neck shaved because hes so fuzzy! Just becuase they are young doesnt mean they dont have hair – and lots of it! i will definately consider this cut for my young man, thanks for the additional option (ie other than the bowl and buzz…. so not attractive!)

    Oh my. Those Green eyes.
(and yes, I meant to capitalize the G. It needs to be in this case.)

    Such a beauty.

My 4-year-old rocks the longer, thick hair too, and when I ask them to leave it longer in the front, they think I’m crazy.

Totally stealing this picture and bringing it in next time.
