hair thursday makeover 57

Meet someone who didn’t provide her name.

Someone’s hair:

Naturally brown with golden highlights
Consistently highlights her hair
Hair is very dry, “practically fried”
Thick and curly
Prefers long
Uses a blow dryer occasionally and a straightener frequently
Lives in humid environment

I know someone (let’s call her Jane) wants longer hair, but I do think a slightly shorter cut would look very fresh, as well as getting rid of some of the drier ends. However, if Jane wants a longer cut, I would recommend growing her bangs out.

Let’s take a look at the two options.

Option #1 is a flirty style that would freshen up Jane’s look. I love the sideswept bangs, and I would ask Jane to pay particular attention to the way the bangs blend into the side of the hair. Right now, Jane’s bangs are too severe on the sides. They really don’t blend at all, so I would request that she make a note of that with her stylist. Blend, blend, blend.

Option #2 would be really pretty as well. If Jane wants to stick with the longer length, I would highly recommend growing out her bangs to a nice, chin-length layer. That way, Jane will still have movement around the face, but the overall look will be very different.

As for products, I would recommend looking into the styling lotions mentioned by Aleks this week, and I don’t think it would be such a bad idea for Jane to let her natural curls air-dry once in awhile to keep it as healthy as possible.

What do you all think? Should Jane go shorter or keep the length?

I love option 2 in the bang department – would be much more flattering on her face. That said, the length in option 1 is ideal, and would allow for some fried-end-trimming.

Also, a note for whoever you are, if you rock the curly (with the right product(s)) and air dry at least 3 days a week, you could undo a LOT of that heat-related damage and dryness. I’m just sayin’. :)

As far as getting rid of the dry, fried look and feel to her hair, Jane is going to have to stop straightening her hair so much. Once a month, tops! Embrace her curls. Possibly even stop highlighting her hair. My hair used to be dry too because I highlighted a lot. Finally I embraced my natural color and grew out the highlights. It is now shiny and soft and I wear it both wavy and straight, but I don’t straighten it very often. Waves are chic and sexy.

Whoorl is spot on here. Either style would look great. I hope that Someone takes this sage advice.

The bangs are way too severe and I’d like to see what her hair looks like with her natural curls. I completely agree with the side swept bangs, but really think her natural curls could look more sophisticated than the straightened look with draws attention to how dry and damaged her hair is. She should also try a moisturizing shampoo/conditioner and a heat protectant spray before blow-drying/straightening. A cut a few inches shorter would help get rid of the damaged ends and make her hair look a lot healthier. She could also ask her hair stylist to thin out her thick locks.

Any chance we could get a tutorial on side swept bangs? I think I must be round-brush disabled because I can never seem to get my bangs to look right. When I try to grow them out, they just always end up in my eyes.

I’m completely digging Look #1- I too think the longer hair has to go for now until its overall condition improves. I also agree that maybe Jane should try going with her natural texture every so often to speed up the healing process- I always find I actually don’t mind my own hair on occasion, even when I think I’m SO SURE it sucks before I try it.

As a curly girl, I say GO WITH THE FRO and stop straightening it. Neither of those smooth, straight styles are going to work in the real world for a person with naturally curly THICK hair. Not to mention the damage!
