Good Reads

Your book recommendations are awesome, and like a good obsessive-compulsive organizational queen, I’ve entered all of the suggestions into my Goodreads account for safekeeping. I think I shall start with Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire series because, frankly, Kristin told me they were a “jiggity jillion times better than Twilight” in the comments.  And who am I to ignore such a bold statement? A JIGGITY JILLION TIMES? Sold.

As a thank you for your recommendations (keep ’em coming!), I am going to post a little giveaway tomorrow. A giveaway involving the cutest monogrammed object in the history of the world. I am not kidding, you will cry tears of precious joy.

I’m sobbing right now just thinking about it. Oh, wait…no, THAT would be due to Wito not taking a much-needed nap. Why is it that, in his utterly unfair eyes, a 3-minute snooze in the car is a perfectly acceptable substitute for his normal 2-hour afternoon nap? WHY? Why am I being punished for letting my child gleefully run around a dewy park all morning, only to have him conk out 5 blocks from my house and wake up mere seconds later all refreshed and shit? Once again, my attempts to keep him awake for the last mile of my drive failed miserably, and I will now pay dearly.

I mean, will you look at this?

He’s not even lying down. What ever happened to the good old college try? At least show me some effort, kid.

Oh! One more thing. Only two days left to enter my Accessories Challenge at The Working Closet. Come on, you know you want to show off your lovely accoutrements. A darling scarf could be yours…

At least he’s staying in his crib! Paige figured out how to climb out of her crib this summer, thanks in part to her older sister. “Hey! You don’t need to stay in there. Watch this, you can get out!”

It totally forced our hand… she’s now in a toddler bed. Not something we planned until the girl was at least 2 1/2!!

Nap time over here is a complete and total disaster these days. There is wailing and gnashing of teeth. I won’t say by whom.

I apologize if this is duplicative — I’m too lazy to read all the comments — but Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a wonderful, wonderful book.

Ah yes, Charlie tries that old trick on me from time to time. That’s why I am always racing home like a madwoman if it’s anywhere near naptime!

I stand by my jiggity jillion. Though I will warn, like everything (Harry Potter, Twilight, etc.), the first one starts out a bit slow b/c it’s a series and she has to establish all the characters. So bear with it. But book 2, 3, 4, etc. etc. etc.–amazing! I’m finishing the last of the Twilights then borrowing the Outlander ones from Moose, so I’ll let you know how those are.

Also, recent reads I’m obsessed with: Glass Castle (kind of an oldie, I know), and Love Walked In (the sequel Belong to Me just came out and was quite good, too).

You’ll have to let me know how the southern vampire books go! I was going to pick up the first one, but I heard there are a lot of grammatical errors. And that would really make me gnash my teeth. lol. But I am LOVING True Blood!

Have you read “The Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon? Highly recommend it. VERY HIGHLY.

Oh! do I know that move. In fact, I saw it on my own video monitor this afternoon.

The only good part about the no-nap afternoon? Early bedtime.

I feel your pain. I have been known to open car windows in sub-zero temperatures to keep the kids awake until we get home. Or have them fall asleep, get them all the way into the house, into their bed only to have them wake up as soon as I shut the door.

    Good Luck tonight.

I TOTALLY want to start that Charlaine Harris series too, because that is what the HBO series True Blood is based on!

Also, I share your pain about the 2 minute nap in the car eliminating the real nap. It’s horrible. I just content myself with putting them down an hour earlier at night if at all possible.

The “nap skip” happened to me too today. He ended up being a crank butt by 4:30 so I put him down…and he never got back up… Now it’s 12:50 AM and I just know the minute I think it’s safe to go ahead and go to sleep, THAT’S WHEN HE’LL MAKE HIS MOVE!

I’m also impressed that that little crib contains Whoorlito! It seems like he could just swing his leg over and climb right out. Mine seems huge in comparison – but now I’m wondering if this design wouldn’t be a great space saver!!

    Can’t wait for tomorrow’s post!

my son does the exact same thing. 5 mins of sleeping in car before nap = 2 hour nap for him. WTF?

Just like Sonja, I get freaked’ the eff out if Mister Man goes to bed all early and sleepy. Is it a nap? Is it an early bedtime? Should I wake him to feed him? Should I change his diaper? WHAT DO I DO?

Then I get all sweaty and panicky that if I leave him alone he’ll decide be saucy and alert at an ungodly hour. And then will the pattern repeat itself? AHHHH!

This is what my life has become…

Isn’t that always the case???? I think it is a toddler rule. 5 minutes in the car = 2 hours in the crib! Same goes for the stroller although tends to last a bit longer than 5 minutes.

Ha! I’m about to start those Sookie Stackhouse books, too. I’m going through Twilight withdrawal, and my mom got them for me after I mentioned I’ve been watching True Blood. She’s a keeper.

Also? So glad to hear I’m not the only one whose child magically recharges after closing his eyes for all of 12 seconds in the car. WHAT GIVES, BOYS? NAPS ARE REFRESHING, DAMMIT!

I’m gearing up to start the Southern Vampire series, too, also because I almost cried when I finished devouring the Twilight series over a long weekend.

I second (third? fourth?) the Outlander recommendation. I had a very difficult time getting into the first book, picking it up and putting it down innumerable times, but when I finally plugged through, I was hooked. The fifth book in the series is currently sitting on my bookshelf with the rest of the library goodies picked up recently, and I’m ready for my next Claire & Jamie fix. I was wholly turned off by the idea of A: a historical romance; and B: books involving time-travel. I’ve never been so happy to be so wrong.

In more fluffier readings, I just finished the third in the Queen of Babble series by Meg Cabot. They’re chick-lit, quick reads, nothing especially thought-provoking, but fun.

And Goodreads rocks. It’s my new best friend, thanks to the recommendation from a co-worker.
