My Birthday Request

Today’s my birthday. Yesterday was my wedding anniversary.

I’m not telling you this because I want your adoring Birthversary wishes (although, I kind of do), I’m telling you because I want free reign to talk about something completely materialistic and shallow in peace.

(This coming from the girl who talks about hair all day.)

I’m sitting here, completely present-less and it’s all my fault. I know some lovely people (namely, my husband) who would very much like to bestow a gift or two, but I can’t make up my mind. Meh, meh and MEH.

I need a new purse. Okay, I want a new purse.

Here’s the deal. When it comes to handbags, I guess you could say I like classic ones. I’m not the type to switch out my bag on different days, so the bag I choose is relatively important due to the fact that it will be on my shoulder for the next couple of years. Plus, the KICKER. I want to be able to pull it out of a dustbag in ten years and still think it’s cute. (Updated to add: I also occasionally sell my bags on eBay, and LVs have a great resale value.)

This is my current bag:

Oh, my trusty Louis Vuitton bag. You have served me well, my friend. It’s not you, it’s me! I swear!

(Have I ever told you about my fabulous boss who called my Louis Vuitton a “Vicki Lawrence”? I would walk into a breakfast meeting and in his fiercest voice, he would croon, “Girrrls working her Vicki Lawrence today!” God, I miss him.)

Well, Vicki, it actually is you…you see, the wide strap falls off my shoulder when I bend over to pick up Wito, and considering I am constantly picking up Wito, this is a problem. I need straps that will stay put. So, I’ve been putting in some time at the local Louis Vuitton store. (And when I say “time”, I mean the sales associates run for cover when I walk in, whispering “the girl with the baby and ALL OF THE QUESTIONS is here. Again.”)

I’ve tried every single bag, pulling the stuff out, putting weight in it, bending over to pick up Wito, looking in the mirror, rinse and repeat. Like a hundred times, but I’m SORRY people! We’re talking a hefty amount of cash here- I want to make the right decision.

After much hemming and hawing, I decided on this style:

The straps stay put, it’s not too big, not too small. Yee haw. *yawning*

I thought my decision was made until I saw this yesterday:

Sure, it’s not the most “classic” style, but I think I’m in love. Plus, my adoration for gray leather knows no limits. And do you know what? I’m only 33 years old – I have the rest of my life to carry a Vicki Lawrence! Plus, did I mention my lovely parents gave me this bag for my birthday a couple of years ago? Do I really need another?

People, I’ve looked everywhere. I don’t like lots of hardware, grommets, etc. I don’t like black. I don’t like LOTS OF THINGS. I think this gray bag and I were meant to be together.

Do you like the gray bag? If not, do you have any other suggestions for me?

It’s my birthday, damn it. Halp!

As much as I love the LV, I’d probably go with the bag. Love it.

I love the gray bag. LOVE. My vote is for the gorgeous, sexy, adorable gray bag. Really really love the gray one.

Plus, maybe its just me, because I don’t have the Louis Vitton love like most people seem to, but I think one Louis Vitton is enough. Especially when they are as similar as those two purses.

    The gray one. Really.

    Happy annivirthday!

Happy Birthday, Sarah – I vote for the Louis Vuitton…sorry, but I love LV :o) If you are in a position to purchase an LV, I say go for it! Have a happy day, and happy anniversary as well. – Michelle

PS – What is going to become of the old LV that is in the first pic above? I know a girl in Cincinnati who would love to buy it from you and give her a loving home :o)

Happy, happy birthanniversiday! You too are about the most gorgeous people, just bee-tee-dubs.

I, too, am a ginormous fan of the gray bag! Whoa – that makes me sound like I’m saying I’m ginormous… not really what I meant. I mean that I lurv the gray bag. LURV it!!!!

I’m with you on not liking a lot of “stuff” on my bag. And there are too too many bags out there now with all the stuff.

Go with the gray bag! It’s fun and different! We all need a little variety in our lives!

  • Sadie

    November 6, 2007 at 7:51 am

Get the gray bag. It’s more versatile than the LV because of its color (gray! goes! with! everything!), plus it’s just infinitely more attractive to me. I am sorry, but I think most LV bags are fucking hideous, your Vicki included. That is not a bag, it’s a POCKETBOOK. Like my grammy has.

Also, another cool thing about the gray Anthropologie bag is that it’s simple but unique – you won’t see 14 other people with the same bag each day.

Wow. Thanks for those lovely birthday wishes. *banning your IP address* ;)

you *two* — I meant TWO! Not too! I hate it when I do that!

Get the grey one. It’s lovely! And totally original. LV’s(I like the one you had picked out however) are boring to me – totally done to death. Yes, they are a status symbol, but to be honest, they’re boring and stuck-upish! Go for the grey! (And the LV too maybe?)

I say go for the gray purse – it’s so pretty! Happy Birthday.

Happy Birthday! I love the gray, but then again, I’ve never had a thing for LVs.. Have you seen this? I’m having trouble resisting its tractor beam….

  • Annika

Get the grey bag! Vicki isn’t going anywhere. You can get that bag next time.

    Happy Birthday! Happy Anniversary!

    November 6, 2007 at 8:19 am

You know, I never really had a thing for LVs either. That is, until I moved to Orange County.

That’s just plain depressing, isn’t it? The OC is turning me into a Stepford Wife.

  • Sadie

OH! and I did mean to say Happy Birthday! sorry I forgot that part, though I doubt it would have softened the blow I delivered to Vicki. :P

    November 6, 2007 at 8:27 am

I think you have great taste. I would be torn. Go with your gut ;)

    And Happy Birthday! Happy Anniversary!

  • Kristen

    November 6, 2007 at 8:28 am

I am a die hard Louis Vuitton fan. I love mine (classic! pretty! love!), so of course I say stick with the Vicki Lawrence. I love a bag that never goes out of style. Have you considered the Damier style? Also a good choice.

  • Erin

    November 6, 2007 at 8:30 am

Ok – I will be the outlier here and vote for another LV. I have the cabas mezzo and it fits EVERYTHING and doesn’t fall off my shoulder. I also have the lockit horizontal (both in monogram canvas) and that one you can wear on your shoulder or on the crook of your arm, so its’ good for toting baby stuff and for going out.

LV is classic and will never go out of style. I’ve had my Speedy for years and still pull it out all the time.

    Oh, and happy birthday!

    November 6, 2007 at 8:36 am

Happy Birthday to a fellow scorpio…i just had my 29th on Saturday! And….happy anniversary.
Oh how i love handbags…and would much rather discuss them then hair…or anything else in this world, for that matter. So i have a few suggestions…but first i must say…i think its a must for you to have two straps…preferably flexible fabric/leather in order to hug your shoulder and the shirt/sweater you are wearing as to not fall down while picking up wito. My bag would be a nightmere for you….one thick strap.
Ok so this is my opinion…love the gray anthro. bag BUT…i do not think its timeless…i think you might be sick of it in 6 months and resort back to your trusty louis. But i do like it.
How about Gucci? Oh how i love thee. This leather definitely wears well (that gucci cloth gets filthy) and oh the timelessness (is that a word?)…

  • Fiora

    November 6, 2007 at 8:40 am

I’m ALL for unique bags, and Anthropologie is always full of unique! (Although I am biased as I have a few bags from there as well) The grey bag has personality! LV? eh, not so much :)

  • andrea

    November 6, 2007 at 8:42 am

A tough choice, but I have to say go with the grey bag. So simple, yet so stylish, not to mention it will go with absolutely anything.

Happy Anniversary and Birthday. I squeeze both holidays in a few days apart from one another in October and last year made the same gift request and had the same amount of trouble with the decision. Finally picked out a bag I loved and am still very happy with it a year later.

    go for the gray!

    and happy, happy birthday. :)

  • Lindsay

    November 6, 2007 at 8:43 am

My vote is definitely for the gray bag. So pretty!
I don’t have any real opinions one way or the other about LV in general, but that new LV one you pictured is just not doing it for me. It’s just kind of a weird shape that makes me think of old women and diaper bags. And while I love both old women AND diaper bags, I would guess that’s not the look you’re going for? You are far too gorgeous (and I mean that in the least creepy stalker-ish way possible) to be carrying around that bag.

Oh, but please tell me you’re keeping the other LV bag, which I LOVE (in all capitals) for use when you’re done with the bending down all the time stage? It’s such a nice shape.

I’m definitely keeping that one. I still love it! :)

  • erin rae

    November 6, 2007 at 8:45 am

Love, love, LOVE the gray bag. It would be my choice.

I’m not going to bash the LV, since I have a vintage LV that was my grandmother’s. I adore it, and regularly travel with it (it’s a larger sized bag) as my carry-on. However, I love the individuality of the gray bag.

I’m a total bag whore and have started to switch them out much more regularly, so as to actually get some use out of the $$$ spent on them!

    Go for gray!

  • erin rae

    November 6, 2007 at 8:45 am

  • Meagan

    November 6, 2007 at 9:03 am

Definitely, defintely the gray. Gray matches everything! Plus that bag is supple and lovely and calling your name. “Sarah! I love you! I will never fall off your shoulder or hold your cell phone hostage. You know you want me! Don’t fight the love!” Clearly it’s an amazing purse. How could you even question it?

  • jen

    November 6, 2007 at 9:12 am

Is this grey bag Orla Kiely? I have the exact same bag except in a white leather and I must caution you. While I love the bag, it isn’t the most practical. It is hard to open and close and it never sits quit right. I love it and can see why you think it is cute… cause grey leather is amazing…just be forewarned my friend. And if there is one thing I know, it is handbags!

Yes! I’m so sad to hear this, but you might have just saved me from trouble. THANK YOU.

Gray bag, all the way. When I scrolled down and it appeared on the monitor, my heart did a little happy dance in my chest cavity. If you had the same reaction, you should TOTALLY GET IT.

You’re right, you have the rest of your life for Vicki.

Happy Anniversary to you and D, and Happy Birthday! My birthday is tomorrow, and I’m in a similar situation–I want a new bag for my birthday and have yet to pick the one I want. My husband has given up the notion of buying one for me by tomorrow.

I really like the gray bag, but I must agree with the person who commented that you might not be as fond of the bag in six months (even though the gray is lovely). I’m not a huge fan of LV, but I love a well-constructed bag with classic styling.

Okay, so I’m not doing so hot with the advice here. Sorry.

  • Gretchen

    November 6, 2007 at 9:19 am

Let me try that again, sorry.

    Happy Birthday! And Happy Anniversary!

I would go with the gray bag. I wish I would have thought of gray. Goes with brown and black, no bag swapping (or more realistically, sheepish wrong color bag carrrying, c’mon I have 2 little kids…) required. Plus, it’s from Anthroplogie, so it’s automatically my fave. I confess I just don’t get the LV thing. No insult intended, but it kinda summons images of old ladies to me too. But what do I know – go with your gut. I should be taking style advice from you!

  • mcgee

    November 6, 2007 at 9:30 am

happy birthday! happy anniversary! get the gray bag!

as many have said above me, the LV won’t go anywhere. they’ll still be carrying that style years and years from now.

HA! I am a dork! When I read “I’m sitting here, completely present-less and it’s all my fault” I thought you meant you had no present to give to your husband!! :) HA!

About the bag… totally a non-purse-carrying-mom :) So, no opinion here! Sorry!

  • Kathy

    November 6, 2007 at 10:00 am

This is the one area I can actually speak with some authority as my handbag obsession is a bit out of hand. That said, I may be the last person you want to ask for help in this area… because my answer, without uncertainty, is…

If you absolutely must choose…. I’ve always said (especially when justifying handbag purchases) is that if you think about the bag more than once a day (in my case 47 times a day) then you most certainly love it and need to own it. If you love it so much that you can’t stop thinking about it / doing that back and forth thing in your head… it should be yours because you will inevitably appreciate it and will therefore make it a worthy purchase.

Or when in doubt, go with your first instinct and get the gray because thats a hot bag.

  • Kelly

    November 6, 2007 at 11:01 am

Happy b-day you old hag! I didn’t know you had me by a year and a half. Absolutely, 100%, get the gray bag, stop looking, just go with your gut, it is TERRIFIC!!!!

  • slynnro

    November 6, 2007 at 10:03 am

I just got a gray Marc Jacobs bag and I LOVE IT. The LV bag will always be around, the gray won’t.

  • Jen

    November 6, 2007 at 10:29 am

  • rebecca

    November 6, 2007 at 10:42 am

LOVE the gray bag. And I, too, am a giant fan of the “classic” Vicki Lawrences. But I think you should go for the gray especially since you have the backup looping bag.

Happy b-day Whoorl!!! I wish you a year of fabulous purses and even more fabulous hair.

  • Dani

    November 6, 2007 at 10:46 am

    November 6, 2007 at 11:12 am

I was planning to fawn all over your gray bag choice until I say a pp mention some complaints about it. Darn! The LV is classic and gorgeous, but I definitely like the look and style of the gray bag better. Best wishes in your bag search!

And most important of all, happy birthday dahling!

  • Miss Peach

    November 6, 2007 at 11:16 am

Delurking to say… if you like LV but already have 2 LVs, what about a Goyard? I’m not sure if they’re more, price-wise, or not… Not sure where you can get them out there. Here (NYC) it’s just at Bergdorf’s and Bendels. Maybe there’s a shop in South Coast? They’d be nuts to be missing out on that cash cow if not.

Also, of the two, I vote gray! very cool.

  • Kristin

    November 6, 2007 at 11:18 am

    Happy Birthday and Anniversary!

I read the above comments and so want to go with the majority and say get the grey bag, I love it! But I read the one that said it isn’t practical and ouch. Keep looking for a different grey bag because now, I love grey and LV will be around forever.

And now I totally understand the $100 hairbrush recommendation.

  • Tonya

    November 6, 2007 at 11:25 am

I hear all the caution, but just get the gray bag. If you end up hating it for open/close issues, trade it in. Christmas is coming!

  • Linda

    November 6, 2007 at 11:27 am

I love the gray bag but if it doesn’t open and close well, then that could be a problem. Can you imagine having to fight to get it open with a child on your hip! Happy Birthday/Anniversary!

Kristabella – it’s not just you! I too think of the Happy Anniversary song from the Flinstones!

  • wishcake

    November 6, 2007 at 11:31 am

Hell to the yes on the gray bag. I’m going to pretend I never saw it, otherwise I may have to become obsessed over it, and the husband is already a bit over me and my obsessions (including the ripped out Target ad photo of the $549.95 camera that I have strategically posted next to the computer and JUST WON’T SHUT UP ABOUT AHHH.).

So, there. I love the bag.

And thus ends my love affair with said bag.

Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you….
Happy anniversary, happy anniversary, happeeeee anniversary!!!

I say go with the gray. The LV has a narrow top and may be more difficult to find/add/remove things from it.

  • sunny

    November 6, 2007 at 11:42 am

get the LV. seriously, its not going to disappoint you. fall collections this year are all over the place and there are very few classic ones in the bunch. LV is not OC – its also very popular in Europe as a staple.

when you are out of the toddler woods then you can funk it up with trendy impractical styles!

  • Emily

    November 6, 2007 at 11:50 am

Happy Birthday! And gray bag all the friggin way. That bag is gorgeous… AND DIFFERENT. Sometimes? I want to throw things at all of you LV people and ask you to expand your horizons a bit.

  • Lisa

    November 6, 2007 at 11:51 am

So, you already have a classic LV bag, and so I think that you should go for the grey one. That being said….I do love the LV bag you chose. And, I like how durable the LV is, and does not get scuffs and/or stains like other lighter colored leather bags can get. Can you see if the grey one is easy for you to open and close? Is it that much of a big deal for you especially since your hands are already full opening and closing the diaper bag and grabbing things for Wito out of there? I find myself spending way more time going in and out of a diaper bag vs my regular purse…Okay, so on another note Happy Anniversary ( I knew it was the Mauna Lani right when I saw the photos. We went there a couple of years ago, and we stayed at the Mauna Lani Terrace for two weeks in September–you should go there with Wito– if you have any question s about the terrace and going there with a little one let me know!) Oh yes, and Happy Birthday!!!

  • Jennifer

    November 6, 2007 at 11:58 am

Gray is the IT color this fall. Go for it, girl! BTW, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your site. Ran across it somehow, and now I am addicted. My son is 2 months old, and I love watching WITO grow and change, so I know what to look forward to.

Happy Birthday and Anniversary!! Big week for you!!

  • Shawna

    November 6, 2007 at 12:06 pm

Get them both. The gray bag (adorable!) for your birthday–impulsive, fun, just for you. The LV for your anniversary–timeless, classic, will last forever.

I can justify any expense when it comes to handbags.

Handbag Wednesdays in the future? Hmmm? HMMMM?

    Happy birthday!

The grey one – go for the grey one. Much more stylish and fun. The grey one is the one you want to see in pictures 25 years from now. It’s the kind of bag you wish your mother had had once and kept so you could find it all those years later and start using again.

The grey one – go for the grey one!

I love the JCrew bag that deb posted earlier, but what I really must know is, why did you get married one day before you birthday? Any special reason, or did it just work out that way?

It just worked out that way, and interestingly enough, my sister got married the day before her birthday in November.

However, she’s taking it a step further- her anniversary is the 22nd, birthday is the 23rd and the due date of her first baby is the 25th. November is big in our family.

  • cristen

    November 6, 2007 at 1:02 pm

  • Sarah in LA

    November 6, 2007 at 1:13 pm

I have a Cabas Piano LV, which has similar straps to the bag above (which I’ve seen in person and WANT BADLY) The straps are always falling off my shoulder. It’s pretty annoying. Maybe it’s because the drop is not long enough? I don’t know.

And I was recently in NYC and EV-ER-Y-ONE has monogram canvas LV. It’s much worse than in LA/OC, and that’s saying something!

    Happy Birthday/Anniversary, Whoorl!

I agree that the gray bag is a winner – and Orla Kiely rocks. But for me, the buckle deal would give me pause because I’m the kind of girl who requires zip-top access. Give it a test-run around the store and see if it makes you crazy.

Happy BirthAnniversary!!! (You’re the only other person I’ve ever…met (?) who says some sort of Birthversary/BirthAnniversary. Awesome.)

    Meh, LV’s. I’m over them.

Grey one, pretty damn cute. Love the little touches of color but I see someone has said it’s not so functional. I love me some bags and purses. I’m the same way about carrying one for a long time (months and months, not years!) so GOOOOOOOD LUUUUCK. I’m a Picky mo-fo when it comes to bags and purses. I feel yo pain.

While the thought of spending 900 dollars on a bag kinda makes me short of breath, I would go for the LV alma…is that what that one is? Not crazy about the gray bag…sorry:) Happy birthday doll!

Enough with Vicki! The grey bag is also very classic! Go for it. I think that she’s sexy! Of course you’ll need to name her. I’m thinking Sexie Sadie!

Well, I am not a LV fan… too many people carry the fake ones and they have ruined it for us all (see also, Coach). I don’t like “brand names” displayed on bags – I like the thrill of having a bag that people have to ask about.

So, I am IN LOVE with Jack Georges bags. I got this one for fall a few months ago: http://www.jackgeorges.com/products/Lexington_Collection_8926_Tiffany_Bag-294-68.html in navy and LOVE IT. I have used it every day, flown about 8 times with it, and it looks brand new.

    Good luck, and happy birthdayversary!

The grey bag is super cute and looks like it would fit all the essentials plus cheerios and a few toys for the road.

What I really want to comment on is your wedding pictures. They’re gorgeous, as are you AND your husband! Wito is gonna be a heart breaker with your genes!

If ever a post required voting buttons, its this one.

If you have two special occassions – a birthday and an anniversary – perhaps you should have TWO BAGS! Get them both! Also I hear Christmas is coming up.

Happy Birthday to you…..it was mine yesterday, my heart skipped a little beat for ya…..I love having a Nov. birthday, its a great time of year…. I think your choice for the grey bag is sweeeeet……it looks soft and delicious. I could stare at purses for hours and hours sometimes, they seem to be an endless source of entertainment. I recently went back to work, and got to buy bags for carrying my laptop…….and I had some very specific criteria. Isn’t that the most glorious part of being a woman, we can be completely picky and get away with it in the most adoringly way……
Hope you have had a great day…..

I love the grey, not so much a fan of LV. Will you let us know what you end up deciding?

November 5th is my wedding anniversary, too. And I love your blog. Especially the play-by-play styling instructions.
    Too wonderful for words, really.

The bag issue is a hard one, isn’t it? I adore well structured bags and Louis does it well – but I think I’m over the LV.

While I search for a new love, I’m a big fan of Lodis (especially the wallets). It’s served me well for awhile now.

Do tell us what you end up choosing!

Yay Happy Birthday! My fellow November Baby. I have to say that yes, I do like the gray bag. HOWEVER those straps look a little short. I point this out because I recently was bestowed a bag of my own which I LOVE and, admittedly, picked out myself. Like you, I use it every day. It holds everything in my world from sippy cups to lip gloss and it’s perfect. Except for those darn double straps that are just a LITTLE too short especially when the bag is filled with kid stuff and it’s always a hassle to get both of those straps onto my shoulder at once and every time I pick up my little Christopher it ends up hanging from the crook of my elbow. How’s that for a run on? Anyway, those are my thoughts. I say check it out as thoroughly or more than you have your LV’s. But it IS cute. Happy BirthAnniversary!

    November 6, 2007 at 7:47 pm

My name is also Sarah, and my birthday was November 2nd (although I’m 2 years older :( ).
I love ‘bags’, but it took me a looonnng time to feel comfortable spending more than $100. A Coach bag was my first splurge to myself. The fact that I went for a labely purse, was kind of a surprise to me, especially since I never thought I was a fan of branding, like the LV purse. I understand the desire for a timeless classic, but honestly like the grey purse soooo much better. If I saw you with the new LV, I would not make a comment, but the grey bag would envily prompt – “Where did you get that??!!!” Isn’t that what having a hot new bag is all about?

Can’t believe I’m weighing in on this and that you might be reading all these comments — about a purse!! What about Coach bags? Might there be any in grey? I’m all about black bags and not a big fan of LV – they’re everywhere — but love Coach. Class, simple styles. And maybe baby-proof.

    Good luck!

Sarah and Julie – I’m SO glad you mentioned Coach! As I was reading down the comments I was thinking I wanted to suggest Coach, and wondered why no one else was!
    I LOVE my coach bags!

    Happy Birthday & happy anniversary!

I prefer the gray bag but have you considered Not Rational bags? I love my Hansel and Fab bags but they might be too big but I personally pack a ton of stuff when I take my son out. I also am in love with Hayden-Harnett bags. I am lusting after this one right now:

Or you should go all out and get a Balenciaga or save up and get a Birkin. Le sigh. Those are my dream bags.

Happy birthday. I have no bag/purse knowledge, therefore I can give no advice, but I hope that you had a great day, and (from your recent post) it looks like it wasn’t too shabby… Wishing you happy happy years to come…

okay, so i wished you a happy birthday yesterday – just not publicly.

anyway, any bag is a great bag when it’s a gift.

I too am constantly on the search for the perfect bag. At the moment the one I use is by Matt & Nat (www.mattandnat.com), they make their products from “vegan leather” (cruelty-free/pleather?) and they are B-E-A-oootiful!! I know that the pebble and holiday collections have pieces that come in grey. I have the harriet bag from the vintage collection as well as the trainspotting small bag and the large sabre tooth wallet. Hands down best wallet ever.
