hair thursday makeover 1

GAH. Somehow, I lost the first half of this post in my archives. Sorry, Courtney!

Moving along to Participant #2.

Meet Allison.

Allison’s Hair:

Very Fine
Unwanted hair flippage (especially her bangs)
Stubborn cowlick that drives her crazy
Willing to work with products and tools

Allison sent me a photo of her cowlick and what happens to her bangs by the end of the day, so my first suggestion is to lose the bangs. Bye bye. I know she loves the idea of bangs, but no amount of product will help a cowlick that stubborn.

Let’s work with what you’ve got, Allison! Shiny, straight hair! If I had super-straight hair, a bob (inverted or one-length) would be my hairstyle of choice. Looking at Allison’s 2nd photo, I would recommend growing out the bangs, so that her sides are one length and even, but keep the graduated layers in the back.

Option #1 is a great-looking inverted bob, with the front portion of hair being the longest (thus keeping the cowlick under control). It shouldn’t be too difficult to style, since Allison already knows how to work with graduated layers in the back and the front should only need a round brush, hair dryer and a tiny dab of shine serum.

Option #2 is a one-length bob, which Allison could totally pull off with her finely-textured, straight hair. Remember, the longer the top layer of hair, the less amount of flipping will occur during styling or throughout the day. This option definitely is more traditional, so I would recommend punching up her color a couple of notches.

What do you think? You know what to do!

And now for the Whoorl Hair Thursday disclaimer.

Whoorl is not a hair professional, although she plays one on the internet. Please consult with your stylist before making any of the suggested changes. If your hair stylist sucks and does a horrible job, please do not hunt Whoorl down and hurt her. It is not Whoorl’s fault, as she is only trying to spread the hair love. Any other issues may be directed to Whoorl’s customer service department.

This concludes the First Annual Hair Thursday. Please leave your wisdom in the comments section for these ladies! Have a great weekend!

I love this! I can’t wait for my turn in, oh, six months or so. I hope there will be ‘after’ photos of those who go through with your suggestions (which they SHOULD!!!)

First day on your blog (thanks to Alice in Wonderland!) and I get hair, hair and more hair (Alice claims you have the absolute best!). Looking forward to more Hair Thursdays as well as other blog musings. I recently transformed my look (http://newsomi.blogspot.com/2007/07/retro.html) and couldn’t be happier!

Better to hate the serums or to love them too much? Maybe a happy medium is best. Can’t wait to see the “after” shots!

Hair Thursday is really a great idea! i have to say i am a bit jealous, who wouldn’t want to get good advice and fun hair suggestions!

  • Pritters

Allison – one minor suggestion. You didn’t ask but here goes…getting your eyebrows arched will open up your whole face. And if you’re going to have a gorgeous head of hair, why not, eh? Depending on where you live it’ll cost about $18 – $24 and soooo worth it. And it hurts but only for a second. Like being snapped with a rubber bang, kinda! Give it a try!

    A few things:
    1) YAY Whoorl for Hair Thursdays! I’m so excited! I feel a bit like a celebrity! Even more, I feel like I’m hobnobbing with a celebrity! I heart Whoorl :-)

    2) Not to sway anyone’s opinion or anything, but asking me to grow out my hair is close to a death sentence. I can’t do it. It is bad. news. bears.

    3) Although they are a bit bushy at this point in my life, I do regularly get my eyebrows waxed. Is there a difference between simply having them waxed and having them “arched”? Because I’m all about it – Any suggestion is a good suggestion. (well, maybe not *any* suggestion). How does one get their eyebrows arched? Do I just ask my stylist to wax more of an arch into them? Because I will – I swear I will.

Wahoo! This is great, Whoorl! I should do this at some point…my hair…ugh. It’s just…growing. And growing. Losing my waves b/c of it.

I can NOT wait for the after photos!!

  • Pritters

    September 6, 2007 at 1:17 pm

Allison, it may just be different terminology. Do you have Benefit where you are? They call it “arching” and it seems like they take off more brow from underneath. Then they fill in the curve above with the magic eyebrow filler-inner (“browzings” I think it’s called). Voila – the perfect arch.

Would anyone like to chime in on the difference between eyebrow arching and eyebrow waxing?

I love this, it’s so fun. I also thought that it was totally cool that you don’t know which way the vote is going until after you vote. So you can’t be swayed by other peoples decisions. I think I’m going to send you my picture and sign up. Though I know it’ll be next year before your available. It looks like it’ll be well worth the wait.

    Thank you thank you!
Very good suggestions. Hopefully I can get to the hair salon soon to get you those “after” pics you all desperately want.

In the meantime, can any of you ladies suggest products and styling methods to get the wavy gorgeousness of option one?
Break it down for me please…I am wave challenged!

Truly fun! Great advice. And thanks to Courtney and Allison for being so brave.

I have to know – who is option #2 for Courtney?? It looks a bit like Kelly Clarkson, but not.

  • Sharri

    September 6, 2007 at 4:58 pm

Ok. So the fact I don’t know who Option #2 is makes me feel like I’ve been living under a rock because I’m sure it’s someone I’m supposed to know…

Whoorl, I think Hair Thursdays might warrant a splurge on some new software (Salon Styler Pro…or a knock-off version). With the right program, you could put the hair styles on your participants for an instant “before and after.”

    Hair Thursdays rock!

This is so fun, I only wish I hated my hair so I could participate! In the past couple of years, I have learned the value of a good stylist and GOOD SALON-BRAND PRODUCTS in making hair happy.

Courtney, that is my main advice to you about the products: use the expensive ones. They are almost always worth the extra cash. If you don’t know what you like, you can tell your stylist you want to try something new and ask for suggestions or even samples, which they sometimes have. Otherwise, just pick something that sounds good and try it!

Sharri, I thought Courtney’s #2 was Kelly Clarkson, too.

I was really torn for Courtney and ended up voting for Option 2, but really liking 1 as well.
For Allison, it was no problem choosing Option 1. I think she’d look awesome with that kind of bob.

    Great start to hair Thursdays!

    September 7, 2007 at 6:19 am

    I’m loving this!

Oh, and a side note to Courtney… I have very similar hair and recently cut mine very similar to Option #2 and I’m loving it. Although I don’t have an aversion to serums – the right amount (not much at all) on wet hair does wonders for everyone. Or at least that’s what I think.

Allison, some salons also call it shaping. Pritters is right though, it just means defining the shape of the brow from the under part, and sometimes trimming up the tops. I also regularly get my eyebrows waxed, but I don’t always get them shaped. However, when I do, it does open up the whole face. I find that a good eyebrow shaping will lessen my need for makeup.

True story, when I lived in Denver, I had an eyebrow girl that I loved, and I scheduled my driver’s license photo around my shaping appointment. I am eyebrow obsessed.

I love hair Thursdays… this is exciting! I probably need to throw my pic into the ring because I’ve been growing out my bangs but now have Bang Envy due to your new ‘do. This is always what happens. I hate my bangs, so I grow them out, and then I see someone whose bangs I crave, so I cut them again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Whoorl you are awesome! How fun to have a hair virtuoso suggest great styles and then have the entire internet make even more great suggestions. I can’t wait for my turn, although I’ll admit I caved and lopped off 5 inches yesterday, but I think you’d approve of the style : )

I voted on hairstyle #2 for Courtney because I have similar wavy hair and when you do the stacked bob cut, it really shows off your layers nicely. It is also a *cinch* to style whereas option #1 looks a little trickier to me. But either will be hot!

Allison, you have a great smile. I voted for hairstyle #1 because it is sassier. I would also go blonder and more highlights.
